NEW: Rating Deals Thumbs-Up Thumbs-Down

πŸ‘‹ Hello Deal Hunters!

You will soon see thumbs-up πŸ‘ and thumbs-down πŸ‘Ž on posts.

This is a tweak to the "Like" ❀️ button.

It is an experiment and we welcome all feedback.

How does it work?

On a post you will be able to press a thumbs-up or thumbs-down button.

If a post gets lots of likes it will climb the popular rankings.

If a post gets lots of dislikes it will fall.

Note: For posts to go up and down is not new, likes and dislikes have always affected rankings since Rate was introduced.

The total number of likes are shown

The total number of dislikes are not shown

But, the final score is what is used behind-the-scenes to determine ranking (as it always has been).

This feature of not showing the number of dislikes keeps the Latest Deals community feeling positive and follows the examples of established social media platforms such as YouTube.

When is it coming?

The changes are rolling out to website users over the coming weeks in May 2023.

It is an experiment and please give us some wiggle room. After listening to community feedback and looking at the data we'll make a decision on whether to roll it back, change it, or continue to put it on the Latest Deals app.

Why are you doing this?

When Latest Deals first started we wanted it to be a positive community for all deal hunters to feel welcome.

Deepak, Kelsey and I saw how on other websites it can be a nasty experience with cliques and bullying if you're not careful. So, we designed Latest Deals with just a "like" button. If you didn't like something, scroll on.

Then a few years ago we saw how YouTube successfully changed from showing Likes and Dislikes to just likes. We hadn't thought of it before: Members can still dislike if you want, behind-the-scenes it's taken into account, but the total count remains hidden. In theory, this keeps things more positive.

Last year we introduced Rate to put this to the test. Latest Deals members can vote for deals up or down (and it affects rankings). Millions of votes have been cast in good faith and we found little evidence of silly voting.

Now, we're ready to take the next baby step and move rating to the deal posts themselves. We hope you'll join us in trying it out!

The goal of Latest Deals is always to showcase the best deals in the UK. With our collective deal hunting thumbs, we hope we can vote the best to the top.

Let me know what you think!

Great Stuff. Although there is a valid disagreement with why YouTube dislikes should be invisible, this feature here should work well without visible stats. πŸ‘

I think this is a very positive move. It's good that the thumbs down can't be viewed

This should make it more convenient to see the best deals quicker and allow those that aren't too fall out of site. Will be nice to see how it fairs in action.

Will this feature be shown below the post on the deals page or just if you go to the rate fstyre which currently has a heart and x so effectively the same thing?

NadineBarrett Morning πŸ™‚

You'll be able to like/dislike from an individual deal page πŸ‘

(And you'll hopefully be able to see this yourself very soon πŸ‘€)

Thank you all for the positive encouragement! It is now rolling out.

1) Hearts have changed to thumbs-ups (we'll keep calling them "likes")

Image

2) On the individual post you can like or dislike

The number of likes are shown

The number of dislikes are not shown

Image

3) Behind-the-scenes

The system takes into account both likes and dislikes to determine rankings

Seems like this will make sense and won’t really change much from a user perspective

Yay! Suggested this a few years back.

Shame dislikes are hidden though as it kind of defeats the point hiding them, but hey, least it's a start.

Edit: tried it and it doesn't seem to do a thing?

It should have some effect such as lowering on the popular page or something.

Disliking doesn't =abuse or hate, disliking shows poor deals from good, or it should.

Hiding it serves no purpose.

By hiding negative you are misleading people into thinking it is better than it really is.

I get you don't want "negativity" but negativity doesn't mean hate. It just shows true ratings if we can see dislikes too.

Also showing dislikes would reduce the "non-deals" that get spammed for points.

ukheather Thanks for the feedback. I guess it'll depend on the quantities of likes and dislikes the post had, but it could be that one dislike wasn't enough at that time to change the position on the homepage. The posts are all relative to each other and in time. So if despite your dislike it still had a higher score than others, it'd maintain its position. If it gathered more dislikes such that the total score became less than the next post, it may shift position.

However, note there are other factors that determine a position of a post within the popular rankings too. Likes and dislikes are some contributing factors of many.

ukheather and Tom - I "dislike" some deals as I go through the 25 deals which pop up, because they're offered in shops we don't have where I live, or are aimed at small kids, XXL size men or young women who can wear things I can't - I downvote them because they don't suit me personally, not because they're a bad deal. Am I the only one this applies to? Any thoughts on that? πŸ˜€ x

peecee I imagine there are many reasons why one may dislike a post

Thanks for implementing this, it's a good step

I am concerned that only the positive is visible though, as it could be misleading

I don't think it should be '30 likes, 50 dislikes' so openly for the reason you've pointed out not wanting to introduce too much negativity, but perhaps 'like is +1' and 'dislike is -1' to give a total score will help, even if it never drops below zero

Just thinking with this approach a good deal with 30 likes and no dislikes will look identical from the front end against a terrible deal with 50 dislikes and 30 likes... Obviously the algorithm should push the bad ones to the front less, but even so... It could make those unaware think both are equally a good deal?

SkyUK ps there are plenty of GREAT offers on here, don't mean to be negative either - just trying to help protect people from being misled with the few bad ones that crop up

Love this idea and it’s good that you can hide the negatives and leave this as a positive community. I love waiting for my daily deals everyday though I do spend a lot though I suppose I’m also saving a lot. I’ve already got some great gifts put aside for Christmas and a few upcoming birthdays - actually I’m just thinking I’ve sorted out my great nephew and grandsons birthday next mth and my 2 granddaughters whose birthdays r both in July, got gorgeous perfume for my daughter in March. Thanks Latest Deals for my bargains

I like the fact we can rate down as well as up, but I don't always know how to rate something, I'd love the option to skip it and rate the next one, without having to rate it up or down.

Tom Oh I see! Good to know.

I thought the rate game feature used to be a cross or a thumbs up and now it is a thumbs down and thumbs up, which is why I hadn't realised.

I only ever used to rate up, as I hate negativity too, but love the idea that you can rate them down without any negativity towards it, other than being re-ordered although I tend to view by Newest first.

I just checked a page and can see the change now! I didn't think I had been on one since the change 😁

I love the changes to the site, keep up the good work LD team πŸ‘

Hey all πŸ™‚ Just bumping this back up as the feature should now be live on Google Play Store and Apple's App Store.

Your app should automatically update over the next couple of days or you can usually go to your device's store and force an update if you're feeling impatient πŸ˜„
