Are You Ready for Singles Day?
Money Saving
Monday 11th November is Singles Day, a similar deals event to Black Friday. It originates from China, and the date reads 11.11.
It came about - according to the internet (so who knows) - when some guys at university wanted to celebrate being single, and hosted some events. It then spread and alongside being a nationwide day of blind dates, has now also become one of the biggest shopping events.
Singles Day is now being celebrated by some retailers in the UK.
On Monday, you can expect to see quite a few Singles Day sales online.
Have you heard of it before? Are you excited for it? Have you ever bought something in a Singles Day sale?
I'm curious to see how many people know about it.
Only the 11,11 sale from aliexpress i have even known and you can find dome hidden gems too
I've never heard of it so thanks for the topic - will definitely be looking out for it. I am wondering if my pocket will survive another 'special day' though.
Only just heard of this recently whilst in Amsterdam never knew what it meant or that UK celebrated it either
I've only seen this on aliexpress and as far as I know its a retailers marketing campaign to appeal to singles who in China at least tend to have a higher disposable income, maybe there is less support for couples and children by the Chinese state (overpopulation) so singles have more money to spend. Here the opposite is true, benefits are more favourable to parents and costs are lower for sharing accommendation and council tax etc so often couples can have a higher disposable income depending on how many children they have. I think many retired people in the UK have a very high disposable income who had better paid jobs in the past and final salary pensions etc. That would be a good retail event here. Home ownership has dropped significantly in the UK for younger people with many forced to rent so where as people later in their mortgage years have much more money available, rents in comparison constantly go up in price taking a similar chunk of people's wages.
A one-bedroom apartment in the warm southern city of Kunming costs about $300 per month in the city center and about $190 in an outlying neighborhood. A three-bedroom unit outside the center is only $400 per month.
I've never heard of it before. Then again, I only heard of 'self coupling' a few days ago. That's a new one. I think marketing groups come up with new ways to get people to part with their cash and this is another one really.
Singles Day.. as in people who aren't in a relationship? There are so many "Days" of this and that, but this feels kinda petty and embarrassing someone would celebrate it.
I'd take Donut Day (guess it exists too) over Singles Day.
I only learned about it last year, and it‘s quite big out in China, perhaps even bigger than Valentine’s Day as it’s a Chinese thing. It explains why a lot of the voucher codes I’m coming across have ‘11’ on them
