My son is suggesting I get a ring doorbell but as my front door is at the side of the house all I would see is people knocking on mine and neighbour's door. The street outside would not be visible nor my drive with car on it.

Lynibis Careful with the Ring Doorbell they are good and fine if you don't want to keep any video footage or be able to look back at who was at your door otherwise it's around £50 a year subscription .

Mango4 yes, that is another reason I don't want one, I am trying to keep my bills down, not add more. Thanks though.

Lynibis I've seen people on the Nextdoor app link to articles from I believe reputable sources that say that having a Ring doorbell camera implies that you may have things of value on the property, and therefore makes you more of a target for thieves.

Timmeh I can see that. There always seems to be a down side to everything. Guess it's good for parcel delivery but I only have a couple per year.

When you look at most stolen cars in the UK the list is not filtered by percentage of cars stolen only by the number which means cars that have sold well like Ford Focus's and Fiesta's are at the top of the list. However you have to work out which less popular cars have a high percentage of thefts and it appears to be Mercedes, Range Rovers, BMW etc. Some cars are stolen by joy riders and others are sold for high value parts etc.

As cars are high depreciating assets anyway and higher value cars are at greater risk it makes sense to keep to an older simpler car as you benefit from;

  • Greater reliability and lower maintenance costs
  • Lower insurance and tax
  • Much lower risk of theft.
  • Much lower depreciation.

Lawlessness has become normalized so they think laws don't apply to them.

"They're just kids" Yeah, I'd like to see them rob you and then you'd say "ThEy'Re JuSt KiDs."

Conservative government? Only in name.

It's a shame that the Police don't react to crimes, when this happened near us the police took days to turn up! They just don't appear too be interested in crime?! 🤔

tumblespots I can imagine it is a frustrating job being a policeman. Even when you go through all the effort to arrest someone and then they go through the courts they can be back out on the streets quite quickly. It's clear the deterrent to crime is not strong enough as there are so many habitual criminals. Also we simply can't afford to have enough police now with such high levels of crime. Prison conditions need to be far worse and there needs to be extreme discipline in prisons and we have to stop being pre-occupied with human rights for people that have zero consideration for the human rights of others. We need a national vote on a lot of policies regarding crime so the views of the general population are used rather than idealistic people who just create more of these problems. We are still facing deeper and deeper poverty over time as the government is still borrowing and adding to the debt pile. This will generate more crime and more desperate people as we have to service this greater level of debt.

BonzoBanana I totally agree with you about prisons, as it seems they are more like holiday camps with all the facilities they need to have. We need to make it so that people really don't want to be there! It costs so much to keep them in there too. The whole justice system needs overhauling though and the sentences handed down need to mean what they say?!

tumblespots About 1/3rd to 1/4 of people who go to prison end up re-offending and going back to prison but of course we don't know the percentage of people that continue to commit crime as they may not be caught again and may learn about better ways to commit crime in prison. 1/3rd seems a lot to me, if prisons were absolutely horrible places that people feared going back to then I don't think it would be that high especially as the real re-offending rate could be twice that or more. Most criminal activity is not caught for lesser offences like shop theft, car theft etc. So for all we know the real re-offending rate is close to 100%.

Many countries use prisoners as basically slave labour, working in fields and other industries including assembly. I just feel it makes sense to use prisoners for low cost manufacturing and farming.

This is another reason that car insurance is rocketing sky high. Last week I read about a man buying a brand new Rover but he couldn’t get insurance because thieves stole them.
