RSPCA Reports 25% Increase in Pets Being Abandoned

This is so sad , poor animals , I too am shocked as they become part of the family. Lots of people on the streets her have dogs around here. As it's their companion. The article says due to cost of living and Covid theirs an increase. So I'm guessing it's that

I’m sure lots of families are struggling especially with increasing mortgage payments and vets bills are so high that something has to go.

They are very expensive to look after properly, people get sucked in because they are so appealing, maybe if people sat down and looked at the price of insurance and food they would think twice. It sad that people will be losing their companion because of cost increases.

This always happens when people face greater poverty and struggle to pay bills. Some people have pets because of their children but have no real interest in the pets themselves and then take cruel decisions when it comes to their pets. As pets get older costs increase and it can be a huge amount of money and the pets are not as desirable compared to when younger. My mother had a cat called Casper who lived to about 26 years old and he looked a mess at the end but it never crossed her mind not to do the very best for Casper right up to the end. He was a cat that loved life especially food and had a mainly wonderful life except the very beginning.

I have one cat Conker and he gets high quality biscuits and fresh chicken most of the time, he is spoilt rotten but I wouldn't have it any other way. Just one cat is relatively affordable but I've never owned a dog as it would be cruel as as a single person. My house is relatively small and a cat seems ideal for me. I think I'm too lazy for a dog to be honest. However if I had a dog I would become emotionally attached to it and would have to treat it well even if that meant I had less myself.

it is sad but always happens when the cost of living rises like it is at the moment. Many people faced with real struggles to feed the family and heat the home so sadly pet ownership is a luxury that can be cut out. The other factor being people who got pets during the pandemic when people were at home all day. now most are back working away from home again, having a pet is less practical. All very sad. What really makes me angry are those who just dump their pets and leave them to fend for themselves or die in the cold. At least they should have the decency to drop them off at a pet shelter or somewhere so the pets can be looked after properly

It's absolutely awful. I have always loved animals and we do have our own mini zoo at home. To me they are very much part of the family. I completely understand that times are hard, bills etc but it's the dumping of animals absolutely cruel they do not stand a chance.

I have 3 dogs, 2 of them are rescues. I love them all dearly (though the 1 yr old cockerpoo who is a rescue drives me to the brink of insanity) I could never abandon any of them. So so sad to think people are driven to do this.

What I get annoyed about is my neighbour, who is a few doors down. He has a shed full of cat food and will feed every cat in the neighbourhood although they have homes and are being cared for. I know he is not the only person who does this but why does he not get his own cat as they are so many needing loving homes. It probably boils down he doesn’t want full responsibility of vet bills and the responsibility of finding a car sitter if he goes away. But wish he would leave the cats alone who have a home already.
