Scammers

Some of these scammers must think we are really stupid... Some scammer texted me from a regular looking mobile number claiming to be O2.. saying they have had trouble processing my latest billing from my bank and to update my payment now following with a link
My friend had someone inbox her about vehicle tax and to pay now to avoid any consequences.. lies
How sad are these people
I don’t know how these scammers live normal lives, what do they tell their parents what they do for a living. It’s despicable.
It baffles me how some people actually still fall for these kinds of scams....I get various emails like that, claiming to be from Paypal or something, and they look like a scam, they sound like a scam, they nearly always start "Dear Customer" instead of using your actual name...why would anyone click on a link?
Unfortunately there will always be someone who hasn't heard of a particular scam who will fall victim to it. Even if it's only one in a thousand these scammers will find it worthwhile.
Hopefully no one will ever be too complacent to ever think they can't be scammed. They're not all too obvious.
I have had three texts and a phone call today from scammers. I have been receiving constant messages this month from them
I had one more or less the same but from "Vodafone" three days ago, i just deleted it but i think once they have our numbers we'll get them constantly i reckon the PPI / accident claims people sold on our details
My wife had an email from PayPal a couple of days ago saying that if she spent £5 or more, she would get £10 back. She thought it was a scam, but I checked the email address that it was sent from and it was genuine!
So she spent £12 at The Works on stationary and it only cost her £2.
ALWAYS check where the email was sent from and you should be able to work out if it's dodgy or not.
That's one of the first things I look at when I get those kind of emails- the email address it was sent from. It's pretty easy to spot a dodgy one from that, as well as the fact that most places will address you by your name rather than customer, sir/madam, etc.
"Works on Stationary" Will you post a link to it? I am reasonably confident that many members will be grateful to know how they can benefit just for not moving. Must be frank and say I'd have thought it a scam too
davidstockport David, You need to tag TheChimp for him to know you are asking him a question! x
JoTarpley It was a good natured "rhetorical question" to possibly let him know that his spell checker won't detect an error if a wrongly used similar sounding word exists (it's called an atomic typo).
It almost proves that even with the the best use of artificial intelligence incorporated into spell checkers. That "artificial intelligence" is no match for natural stupidity.
As he's said he has me muted which shows he's perhaps never learned that a wise man can learn from a fool, whereas a fool can learn from no-one.
JoTarpley I agree it's best ignored. I thought it was common knowledge he had me muted - he's mentioned it enough times. Only a few days ago he mentioned he had me and another poster muted and called us (beginning with T rhyming with BIRDS) he tabbed me so I wouldn't miss it.
The full topic has since been removed. (perhaps why you and some others missed it).
I never understood the point of "muting" someone. We can all disagree and all, but I've never muted anyone because it's good to read opinions of all, even of the "haters."
Just feels unnecessary and somewhat childish. davidstockport
JoTarpley Wasting your time Jo - he's beyond help. He doesn't understand how "muting" works. And obviously doesn't want to find out.
If people don't want to interact with others they shouldn't comment on any topic the blocked one creates and definitely shouldn't tab them so that they'll see any unprovoked disgusting comments made about them (that's harassment). The full threads the disgusting comments on are usually removed so many, including yourself, may never see them.
Here is proof he doesn't understand how muting works: https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/chat/using-zoom-skype
Lots of people (especially elderly/vulnerable) fall for these scams. They may seem stupid to many but they are still highly profitable or they wouldn't happen anymore.
jamie15 That site (which isn't supposed to be mentioned on LD) only became a "crappy site" to him when the "snowflake" moderators decided, enough was enough, and decided he couldn't remain.
HUKD still has some good deals regardless of the pseudo Experts, mediocre staff, and so on.
I just visit it as a guest and that's enough for me. Too much censorship on there.
Edit: I got a deal early on Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch) for £40 as I saw it there. Otherwise I'd probably miss it and I'd want it (knowing Nintendo is going to discontinue it in March 2021). TheChimp
PhilipMarc First you shouldn't mention "that site" by name on LD. Second there is no dispute that there are some good deals on "that site" that is where many of the good deals on this site come from and vice versa.
From Guidelines:
Other deal sites
Unfortunately we do not accept links or mentions of other deal sites. This may be because: they are competitors to Latest Deals, they have asked us not to mention them, they are on our naughty list for self-promotion, or perhaps for another reason. These sites include but are not limited to:
The list includes "that site".
If I doubt I ignore it or check actual company
I have occasionally wondered if I've missed out on genuine things cause I think its scam
Probably better to perhaps lose out on what is a genuine offer than get caught out by some scam. I know which there are more of. If things seem to be too good to be true they USUALLY are.
It‘s so annoying to be inundated by these chancers. It always makes me laugh when they can’t spell - I got one that started out as ‘dear costumer’...that got deleted straight away!
But bad spelling doesn't necessararily mean it's a scam. I have had GENUINE communications, from one of the banks I use, where "receipt" has been incorrectly spelt "reciept"
Yep. Amazon CS employees and eBay ones tend to make several typos, but as long as they get it done. I don't care. davidstockport
PhilipMarc I am not only referring to mistakes made by employees but in actual forms and adverts, one TV commercial for Virgin Money spelt forty (as fourty) although it was on screen for less than a second (video had to be slowed down to see it). Virgin pulled that advert when I pointed it out. It must have cost them thousands. When I mentioned it the person I mentioned it to needed convincing it was incorrect.
Most companies don't want to be associated with bad spelling.
I hate when people are trying to scam each other it's not good and it's getting worse as scammers are getting better at it hard to judge real from fake these days.
Ive been recently getting a lot of emails about paying for a TV license . I get 2 maybe 3 emails a day it gets on my nerve, I reply and tell them to bugger off. They were quick to send out more emails and as soon as I started telling them I wasnt falling for it they blocked my email address.
The fact that you reply means they know you're active. That's how they bait people into it.
I receive spam, but it's in the spam box so it doesn't bother me. Besides, if it was a scam about the TV License (which in itself is a scam as it is), it'd be funny 'cause I don't pay for that anymore.
Hi guys, turning comments off on this now as it’s gone a bit derailed and off topic and not so nice
