Shampoo Bars - Would You Recommend?

Ask a Question

Has anyone used Shampoo bars of soap ? and if so would you recommend them. I have seen these advertised as being better for the environment, but wanted to know if they ate any good

Do you get more knots in your hair ?

I tried one a while ago because I didn’t like so much plastic in the bathroom. Unfortunately although it did get my hair clean it was not helping my scalp. My scalp got so dry I gave up on them. Back to plastic unfortunately but better for my head. I’m not sure if some brands are better, I only tried one which was herbal essence I think.

JLouM I must admit I feel I should do my bit for the environment, but I know when using soap you seem to be there ages before it produces any lather, so assume it's the same with shampoo, which may be why it caused a reaction. I must admit still on the fence, bad memories of being a kid and having to use soap on my hair.

I tried some on my daughters hair didn't help at all as we have found out she's very sensitive to perfume products

They are very long lasting and lather well. I tried a Gruum one and there’s no plastic waste.

Pjran I've seen a lot of adverts for Gruum, good to hear you had a good experience, prior to buying

I’ve tried them in the past but never really got the results I wanted to get from them. I found that they were very much better in a small amount

Lush ones are really good. So much variety and different ones to suit all hair/scalp needs. One of the founders was/is a tricologist (hair/scalp dr).Plus if you want to go plastic free but don't want to use a soap bar then their shampoos that do come in plastic packaging you can return 5 empty pots and get a face mask for free I believe. The staff their are really knowledgeable and am sure can advice you on what would be best for your needs. 1 shampoo bar is equivalent of 3 bottles of shampoos is what they claim and honestly it really does last. Only thing is some don't lather like traditional shampoos as alot of them are SLS free which is actually a good thing because SLS can cause many to have sensitive or irritated scalp. Alot of lish shops if you ask and not sure about items will give you some to try for free before you buy 😉

Yes for camping trips they are ideal !! Saves carrying arround bottles of liquids that get squished .. just as good as liquid shampoo i find !

Can't say I'm a fan. Takes a long time to lather up (whilst standing under a running shower), uncomfortable if it gets in the eyes and doesn't seem to make any difference to my hair. I probably use more conditioner to make up for it.

I’ve used Gruum several times and really like them. They are particularly great when travelling or going off for the weekend. Highly recommend

I tried a homemade one from my local alternative shop, I went for the coconut one as I needed some moisture back into my hair, and I must admit it worked wonders, I would definitely recommend a shampoo bar.

The shampoo bars are great, I have been using them for a year now and I love them all. The bars look small but they last a long time, they lather up nicely and rinse out really fast from your hair. I have not had any issues with knots in my hair after using them, they have made my hair feel really soft and easy to style.my daughter doesn’t like them though so I think it’s just a matter of taste, but like you I wanted something that was environmentally friendly.Just make sure you don’t leave the shampoo bar in any wateras it makes them go slimy, hope this helps.

Love them. I have coloured hair and use one in conjunction with a leave in conditioner.

I wet the bar then lather onto my hands before applying through hair.

I don't recommend Garnier as the shape means it breaks into bits quite quickly.

Alberto Balsam is brilliant, keeps whole until it's down to the last 1-3 uses.

recyclekimm yeah I had that exact problem with Garnier breaks down so much!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I got it to try cause it was on offer ages ago on Superdrug and got a free tin for the shampoo bar too

I’ve gone back to the usual shampoo and at least you can recycle their bottles

I tried the Garnier shampoo 🧴 bar once yes it did lather 🧼 well but my hair got stuck all over it lol 😝 and not great when it gets soggy towards the end.. so I have gone back to the original shampoo and the bottles can be recycled

I love solid hygiene products. Unfortunately cannot use solid shampoo as I use a specialist co-wash for my hair and scalp, but I use solid soaps and solid shaving bars, they last a long time and are great for minimising waste

Our Student Radiographer daughter took her Faith In Nature Shampoo Bar to Ghana where she was on an Oversees Placement working in a Ghanian Hospital 2 years ago. Our daughter also took it on her 10 days holiday to Northern Ireland with us to visit family & her five days tour of Italy with her 3 old School friends, the same year & said her hair felt soo good & it was soo glossy...

I think it depends on what brand you use. I've tried a few and found that none of them work for me. I didn't find that they lasted longer as I needed to use loads to get it to lather properly and have enough to actually wash my hair. They cost a lot more and because they weren't lasting as they claim to I was spending more. I'm open to trying again if I actually found one that lasted and didn't cost me a fortune. I know some people love them but they just aren't for me, not at the moment anyway.
