Shops Own Brand Products
Money Saving
It would be lovely to get a list of good ‘Own Brand’ products. I’ll start …. Bought 100g bar each of Dark and Milk Chocolate from Lidl to try it out. Cost £0.29 each. And they were really nice! Brand name is Simply Chocolate. I’ve only a pic of dark choc as milk choc didn’t survive long enough to take a pic.
Lilian W I tried all the cheap chocolates from the various supermarkets and they are not worth buying. Stick to Cadburys containing real milk, etc. It cost more but it is worth it.
jam45 I would have agreed with you years ago but since they got taken over Cadbury have changed the recipe and it’s not the same.
I love Tesco 74% Dark Choc as it’s not bitter. Enjoy a square a day with some almonds and raisins for a healthy snack.
snoogans888 oh I must try that. Although I have to confess, unlike you, I don’t have self control when it comes to chocolate
I can’t find no chocolate for 29p recently in my local sainsburys I have found these dairy milk mystery big bars for 62p each
I've tried the Lidl cheap chocolate bars and wasn't keen on the dark chocolate version but to be honest I'm not really a dark chocolate fan. The milk version was nice though. However Lidl do a 200g bar of fruit and nut style chocolate for around 80p and much prefer that. I've tried the basic 100g chocolate bars at various supermarkets, the price might vary a bit from 29-40p but they pretty much taste the same to me, I probably couldn't tell them apart doing a blind test.
BonzoBanana for me, it’s rare for me to find a dark chocolate that I like but I like this one. In fact I think I probably like all Lidl chocolate. (I should get paid for taste testing ). I can normally be a bit fussy about my chocolate but with the price increase on EVERYTHING I’m more willing to test cheaper brands. I did a taste test on a CAP course I was in and it really opened my eyes to my brand snobbery .
My son loves the simply white chocolate from Lidl and the just essentials white chocolate from Asda. We always buy value and own brand. The asda just essentials garlic sausage is really good.
I love garlic sausage too, but I'm not allowed to eat it in front of MrsChimp, she can't cope with the smell of it.
My son and I tried the asda just essentials pasta the other day and it was really good. We also tried the asda just essentials curry sauce. It tasted nice but was very runny so had to add some flour and tomato puree to thicken it.
Asda beans with sausages. Taste lovely on toast! Was always a brand snob of having Heinz but the Asda ones are nicer and more sausages in them,
kimcress I saw a comparison of the Heinz vs the cheaper beans and sausages shop brands and the person reviewing couldn't really see the difference but he did notice the difference with Branstons version but I don't think he cared much about the difference.
Branding and marketing is all about manipulating people to pay more for goods for a perceived benefit but often reality is very different. Not sure when I last had a Heinz product in my house but they only one's I occasionally buy are their soups when I see a very good offer. I sort of feel I haven't bought any Heinz products at all this year so far at least.
Cant beat some own branded products they're cheaper and most of the time better than branded.
Just got my Sainsbury's order in and even store-brand items' prices have risen. Thankfully, not too much, but even so I had to skip in order to stay within my budget.
Cashew bags of 30p jumped to 50p. That really was too good and too cheap while it lasted.
PhilipMarc yeah. The grocery shopping is definitely becoming worryingly expensive. Will keep trying our more own brand products
LilianW Bird's Eye Paella that used to cost £2.75 is now £3.00 not a huge increase, but disappointing as that price felt like the sweet spot for it.
I had a total of £35 coupons to use on Sainsbury's so I made an order almost £100 worth, and will cost me £62 (they normally charge a few hours before they deliver). And yeah, prices of food will certainly soar even higher. People just aren't quite realizing what they're in (and so am I).
P.S. I'm worried about the blackouts, not because of electricity cuts, rather break ins / home invasions. I hope they don't happen, but people do need to be careful if it does.
PhilipMarc Sainsburys have some good stuff and decent reductions for short life products in the stores local to me. I've noticed Morrisons have become far less competitive recently with higher increases than other stores. For me Asda is doing very well with a wide range of Essential products and some decent pricing on other goods. I pretty much use all the supermarkets on occasion.
PhilipMarc yes I can appreciate your concern re blackouts. I did hear ‘somewhere’ that they weren’t now to happen. Don’t know how true that is so I guess we’ll know soon enough 🫤
BonzoBanana I wouldn’t have shopped in Asda normally however in recent visits to the store I found a lot of their prices very competitive and liked their own brand stuff. I too am definitely shopping around more. I always preferred to just shop in one place before however I’m now inclined to be more price aware and am always delighted when I find bargains and I’m also more inclined to try shops own brand and am pleasantly surprised for the most part.
Asda own brand beans are good! A lot of Aldi own brand things are good, their oat milk I actually prefer to Alpro! Tesco own instant noodles (in packets like super noodles) are really good and 40/45p.
