How do I Get Rid of Slugs?

Ask a Question

I’m sure they must be good for the garden but the slugs seem to have invaded our garden. I don’t want to put crushed eggshells everywhere or salt. No idea why we have so many this year either.

Any suggestions please? Should I just let them roam and feast on whatever they want?

What do you think of this?

My mum uses cheap beer to keep them away. I'm not sure how it works but apparently it acts as a deterrent to them. She has been using it in her greenhouse for decades

The cheap beer is OK in the Greenhouse, but the locals don't like slugs.

Beware the (slug) salad, it's specially made for the touristsπŸ˜‚

MrsCraig I do this too. Was a bit sceptical at first, but did it and couldn't believe how many it trapped on the first night. Just pour very cheap beer in a container and leave out!

GmcK85 that's exactly what my mum does, cheap beer in a container on the floor of the greenhouse. She was sceptical at first too

MrsCraig - Beer doesn't deter slugs it actually attracts them, it should be put in containers they drink it then drown in it, it has to be done carefully the last time I tried it, it looked as if they had invited all their friends from about a mile around to the party.πŸ˜€

My nan used to put yogurt pots in the ground. I think if you put beer in it attracts them (even though seems a waste ) lol

I use beer 🍺traps. But anything would do as long is at least couple of inches tall (traps got little top above, so when it’s raining the water won’t get inside). I buy super cheap beer from Tesco (4 beers for Β£1).

Slugs are attracted to the smell and get inside, and can’t get out, and drown

Does it work? Yes but... getting rid of slugs bodies is not pretty so it’s not for lighthearted 😷

HappyTravels Apparently if you hold one against an aching tooth it will stop the pain, the slime acts as an analgesic. http://www.worldwidewounds.com/2013/July/Thomas/slug-steve-thomas.html

Some people swallow them too.

(I haven't tried either personally)πŸ˜€

So maybe If you have pets put the pots out at night and collect in the morning. Might be sad but as kids found it interesting counting how many slugs were in each pot .

I've used beer as it's the only reliable way to get rid of them, without using toxic pellets. I did try the copper tape but it didn't work and you could see the slime trail clearly across the tape the next morning. πŸ™„

If you have a pond perhaps you could get yourselves some toads, newts or hedgehogs? The song thrush likes them too.

tumblespots we have a pond and lots of frogs so slugs are never a problem. Last year though the sparrows started eating the beetroot leaves!

Golfforall wow, thank you. Never knew such things existed. I'm now wondering how many (cheap) beers I could buy for one box πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

HappyTravels I wondered the same thing , Beer attracts the slugs so best to hide your "beer trap" in your neighbours garden if you don't like clearing up the remains 😏.

Salt is something u will have in the cupboard or slug pellets. Only around Β£2 for big bottle so next to nothing and will last for a long time.

Don't put salt on your grass or flowers well not if you like your grass or flowers 🌹🌹🌹
