Do You Have to Have a Smart Meter Installed?
Ask a Question
Just had a letter from eon that they have arranged a appointment to have a smart meter installed & was wondering do I have to have one installed.
We keep getting bombarded with letters and phone calls from EDF saying our smartmeter is due installation but we dont want one.
dont do it, every single person i know who got one saw the energy prices rise lol and when i enquired the energy company said they dont, till u rephrase the question so they can answer yes, however when i was on eon i was paying twice as much on the electric 10 years ago like £20 a week instead of £10 so if your already being ripped you could chance it
AndrewBrough thats why qe dont want one fitted, heard nothing but bad news about them
I can’t even though getting emails from my provider. If you use economy 7. Or basically if you have storage heaters. They don’t have the correct metres yet. But I will get one when ready. They can’t force you into having one. But i don’t see the problem in getting one myself. It’s just bringing them all up to the new technology. I still remember the old ones that had a disk spinning around. And sticking in 50p to keep it running
Thanks just rang them to cancel my appointment don't feel they are reliable prefer to just put in the readings myself.
Can't recommend eon, had smart meters installed by them 2 months ago, and although the Gas readings and bills are fine , with the electric they are unable to get the readings . My bill arrived last week and is inaccurate as they estimated readings from my old meter. Trying to contact them is a waste of time, ridiculous wait on the phones, email /live chat they make promises and don't deliver on any of them . Find the little in house display useful thou and that works fine for the Gas & Electric. Bit of a mistake moving to eon from British Gas but was enticed by lower tariff rates , oh well only another 9 months and I can change penalty free.
nissan3 I’ve only ever heard negative things about smart meters. As far as I’m aware, they cannot force you to have one installed. They are persistent though. Every so often, they try to book us in for an installation without my consent or permission. They always as why I decline and I’ve stopped given them reasons (or they probably view them as excuses). I now simply say I don’t need to have a reason, I decline. It’s my personal choice.
nissan3 No you don't have to have one. British Gas tried to give Mother in Law one as part of her new contract, when that didn't work they said her meter was old and needed changing. I did a live chat with them said fine to change but it was not to be smart, the result is no meter change and no smart meter and her account is marked as not wanting a Smart meter.
lilyflower . Good to read this. I know the government has set targets but I don’t want to be forced to have a smart meter installed.
lilyflower They tried that trick with me saying that the meter was too old. I was not impressed.
Yes, but it’s a complete waste of time because it doesn’t read anything due to the location of the central hub
No and I don't want one either. There is no need, the meter is just outside the backdoor and I read it once a month to send in the reading online.
I have heard that if they keep trying to make you have an appointment, the way to get around it is by making one, then just keep putting it off again and again until they get fed up.
