Split the Bill or Pay for Your Own?

Ask a Question

If you go out for a meal with friends, do you split the bill or just pay for what you have had?

It can work out costing you more money if you split it when others have had a more expensive dish or drinks.

We don't drink and often I am cautious of pricing when I'm ordering and don't always have a starter or dessert. I do occasionally look for a discount code too and share it when I'm there, to hopefully help everyone.

It depends who we are out with, the occasion and how much they have ordered. If it won't work out much different or it is someone we haven't seen for awhile, we often split it equally, if one of us isn't paying for the whole bill. I can't stand it when people insist we split the bill equally if they've had lots of alcohol or more courses or much more expensive courses like steak or similar, of course they would benefit from it, I've even had people then ask if anyone has any change for a tip - don't look at me, that's just taking us for granted and I'd seriously question the situation and if they are known for doing this, speak to them or have to seriously consider the friendship. Often they earn more anyway or go on regular holidays, then you realise why they can afford to, if they do that all the time 😂

There is being friendly and then there is people taking the absolute P.

DeBunny I so agree with this!! Lots of people do this, just say split the bill like it means nothing to them, but I'm basically paying over what I've had. Sometimes I feel embarrassed and don't say anything and just pay, but sometimes just say 'everyone pays for themselves' that way you're not paying anyone else's share. It's not a nice situation to be in if everyone thinks you're being awkward and trying to get out of paying 😒

DeBunny I always look for a discount code too!

If people pick the more expensive dishes/more courses or drinks I don't think it works fairly.

Depends who I'm with. Me & my best friend always spilt the bill when we go out together, neither of us would take advantage & if on a rare occasion the others meal etc is much more expensive than we'd pay the extra. If we are in a larger group than just pay for what we've ordered. Family we will pay in full or spilt amongst us.

Glitterandgold I think it's important to discuss it before you go or at the start of the meal, that way everyone is on the same page and happy 🙂

Depends really i guess on the price of the restaurant and how much the difference is in what I’ve had compared to others. If i had far more food or higher priced items I wouldn’t expect someone else to pay extra because of that and always offer to split it based on what we’ve actually ordered as that’s only fair

williamslf58 Would it not bother you if you had say a salad and tap water (Just an extreme example) and someone else had a mixed grill and 4 drinks that you'd end up paying a lot more?

I pay for myself unless with a parent, partner or someone has offered to pay the whole bill. I won't be told to split a bill, especially when there's a noticeable difference in people's orders. We earn and spend differently and should order what we can comfortably pay for. With friends/a date, I make sure it's known in advance that I will pay for myself to avoid the irritating awkwardness some people can show when it's time to pay.

It all depends on the situation, if there's not much difference then just split it. If someone's been drinking expensive wine they can pay for it themselves.

Eat in and avoid the bill. If I had to eat out I would just pay for my own cheapest thing on the menu and tap water.

samGoodship - I stopped being a soft touch years ago splitting the bills with people who ordered has much as they liked knowing the rest of us would fit the bill equally.

jam45 I've always just paid for what I have ordered. Think it works better that way.

We split the bill regardless of what others order although I do inwardly object when lots of drinks are ordered by others.

It’s in my culture to either fight to pay the entire bill (obviously, this is with close friends and family) or split it evenly. I do watch my pennies, but on a day or night out, I won’t be watching the pennies

It really depends on who I am with and what the other has had. It differs.

I pay for what I have only because I don't drink and will only have a main meal we sorted it years ago with my friends they split the rest of the bill between themselves

We do go out with friends that like to take it in turns to pay but I would much rather just pay for what I have to eat, I wouldn't expect them to pay any extra.

It depends who we are out with really. We normally just like to spilt the bill weather people are drinking alcohol or not , or having one , two or three courses. But some like to pay to the last penny what they have had rather than spilt the bill. But it's nice if you have invited people out to pick the whole tab up now and again
