Starting a "What Do You Think about ."? Chat and Then No Personal Comment

Ask a Question

What does anyone else think about 'chats' that get posted asking a question eg "what do you think about …." but the OP doesn't say what they think or come back with further comment?

It really annoys me, if the OP wants the views of others why not give theirs first it's more likely to get a conversation.

What do you think of this?

I quite agree those who say - it starts a good conversation (when they have asked a question that is only relevant to them) and don't show any interest in replies, are basically a waste of space. I tend to ignore them.

Hello davidstockport hope you are well. Yesterday someone asked for help, it looked like an urgent request, some of us gave suggestions, I asked for further info, within minutes of OP asking to see if I could help further and guess what tiddly squish, I'll not offer again.

lilyflower I'm fine - If I'm not around much in the next few days I'm changing ISP so might not have an internet connection.

Some people seem more competent at emptying bottles than getting rid of the empties. (and it shows ☺).

If that was about the price/s on fridge - if you check back you'll find the person who asked only joined yesterday, obviously only to ask that question, (no other action) so is probably not conversant with how things work and will, if this site now has a million members, be another of over 900 thousand who'll never be seen again.

Those members, if they make purchases via this site, are just as valuable as the points gatherers, so no disrespect intended towards dormant members, or even non-members - he could have made the purchase without being a member. But had to join to ask the question.

Those questions are *directed* at other users, so the thread maker doesn't need to interact. It's optional.

I wouldn't dream of naming and shaming but one poster has made only 2 comments on the last 11 topics they posted and one of those was to one of the founders. If you bother to do topics for points why would you not reply, if only to get your 5 a day as well?

morning Lynibis Hope you are ok. I think there will be more than one, it's really annoying when someone asks for help, it's given or more details asked for and then nothing. What happened to manner?

Hi lilyflower I am doing fine thanks, as I hope you are. I am just waiting for spin to win on this morning then I am off to do more gardening. Prior to lockdown I was about to have garden paved but it now has to wait so I am making a start on digging up beds and bushes and generally preparing. All good exercise lol.

Nino786I started this thread about people asking for advice/help/suggestions and then not responding to the advice/help/suggestions they were given. The comment I've just posted is a Thank You to Bargain28 as they did respond to say sorted and copied you in as you offered a suggestion.

lilyflower Which one was that? I forget what I have responded to half the time. It's nice somebody showed a bit of gratitude though. People do like to point out when I criticise on here but appear to ignore the good stuff I post in between! Thanks for letting me know anyway. Much appreciated πŸ™‚

Just adding another - not a question but posting headline about some news item and no link to say where they saw the article, they could have made it up for all we know.

The latest one is a topic about pets. Asking us if we have any and how much it costs us to look after them. Again, the thread starter is asking these questions without giving us their own views on the subject. Either you want to have a chat or you don't.

It really doesn’t bother me if you don’t want to answer scroll past I think there are a lot of bigger things at hand than me worrying about someone trying to get points by starting a chat

robyn1988 I had a good conversation with someone about that kind of thinking the other day. There's always something worse happening somewhere but it shouldn't overshadow whatever is bothering you, however trivial it may seem to others. It matters to one person and they want to vent about it. Are you not going against your own advice by posting that comment?

What makes it frustrating is that all the good meaty topics get pushed back a few pages and become harder to find because it gets bombarded with the obvious point gathering ones. If it wasn't for this then there wouldn't be so many complaints.

No not really because as I said if you don’t want to answer scroll past, I wanted to answer so therefore I did not ,just scroll past .

Someone today has asked the same question/query as a NEW topic for the 3rd time in a week. I think if I received no replies to first I would not keep repeating it.

I see we have another about pets, pretty much the same as a couple of weeks ago. Do people not read chats before posting anew one?

Like

lilyflower No they obviously don't. I actually don't think people come to chat (well mostly) in order to have an intelligent chat, or converse about important matters, but purely to find the easiest topic, jot the minimum words for points and move on without a second thought.

You can see that by the amount of inane chats that stay on page one a lot longer than those with some thought. The whole chat system seems flawed to me. Often, the search does not bring up the chat you are looking for, repeats are even repeated, when you do give a genuine reply or advice it is ignored.

It would be a good experiment to have 2 chat sections. One for those who purely want points and another, point free, for those who want to interact with others, especially during lockdown when time lays heavily on hands.

Hey guys πŸ™‚

I appreciate that this can be frustrating!

I know I've said it before (and I am genuinely sorry we haven't been able to get any of these updates live yet!) but we are thinking of ways to reduce duplicate topics (with the same "Whoops, it looks like this has already been shared?" idea as when you share a deal) and incentivising continued, genuine discussion.

I believe it's only a few people that are perhaps being a bit cheeky and misusing the section for points. I reckon for the majority of people it's an innocent mistake where they haven't thought to check existing topics first and/or create a post then forget to return!

I'm going to close this topic now as I think its original purpose has probably run its course and I'd rather people use the reporting function than "out" anyone publicly.

If anyone wants to follow up on any of the above please do drop us a message via the contact form, you can even include a little note if you want it to be forwarded directly to me πŸ‘
