Student Houses and Bad Health Risk

In the News

X Ray has highlighted some of the worst conditions for student living accommodation. Some cases are disgusting, but the students need houses. Surely Universities should protect these students and not leave it up to them to deal with?

When I was a student unless you lived in the student halls or flats then you were on your own when it came to accommodation. If the university owns the accommodation then yes it is their responsibility but if renting privately then it is the landlords responsibility to deal with any issues. The universities might be able to offer advice on what to do etc but they can't do anything about a privately rented accommodation unfortunately.

I just wish that, considering the students pay all that money for their lessons and teaching, that if only for their mental health that the university should protect them against bad landlords. It wouldn't happen to many but if it got bad the Uni should step in and perhaps ban the really bad ones from renting to them.

CaroleBallard the problem is that students don't go through the university to find landlords or accommodation. It would be a good idea if the uni had a list of approved landlords but they don't.

My daughter rented a house with her uni friends and it was disgusting with mould and damp. The estate agent was interested in helping them nor was the landlord! They had a contract so they couldn’t move.

See by rights they could have reported the landlord to the council, but often it's a case of not many places they could actually stay, THIS is when the university should step in I think and take the landlord to task, and/or blacklist them from student accommodation recommendations.

CaroleBallard I agree with you. The place was a dump. I appreciate students don’t do much housework but it’s wrong to have damp and mould.

Pjran I lived in damp and mouldy privately rented student accommodation. It was always caused by students drying their washing on the radiators. It's something that can build up over time and from previous tenants if the landlords don't do anything about it between tenancies. I also remember my housemates cooking with no lids on the pans and the condensation used to drip down the walls so it's no wonder there were problems with mould.
