Supermarket News: Veg Deals Down, Impulse Buys Up
News
I enjoy researching supermarkets and the statistics of their deals. What they promote has a big impact on what we buy (consciously and unconsciously). It pays to keep an eye on the year-on-year trends.
Comparing March 2016 with March 2017 reveals vegetable deals are down and "impulse" promotions are up.
Across ASDA, Co-Op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, all supermarkets had fewer fruit and vegetable deals than last year.
Waitrose saw the biggest drop, down from 53 deals on fruit to 33 (37.8% drop). Co-Op -6.7%, Morrisons -18.8%, Sainsbury's -17% and Tesco -12.5%.
"Impulse" deals were up 2.4% month-on-month. All supermarkets have increased the number of deals in-stores with the exception of the Co-Op and Waitrose.
This research was done by Assosia.
Notable exceptions are the discount retailers Aldi and Lidl, whom since April 2017 have been locked in a vegetable pricing war with ASDA.
If there are no deals on fruits then that means it sells really well and in their perspective, there's no need to sell them at a lower price. Still, you always have the fruit/fish/meat merchs on the streets and so on. Oh, and there's also Aldi, LIDL, Farmfoods, Makro, Costco and etc.
I asked Buyology via email if they were planning to open a branch in London and they said that they've got no such plans. Bummer. Buyology has some terrific deals that beat every other supermarket, or usually.
But anyhow, if anyone is curious about Buyology stores here they are:
