Superscrimpers - Thing of a Past?
Ask a Question
I used to love watching a show "Superscrimpers". It was full money advice and little handy tips around the house.. it would also feature a superscrimper who goes to extreme lengths to save a penny... Some of them would wash dishes in bathwater and would go above and beyond... is it a thing of a past? When everywhere just screams buy!buy!buy! All the fast fashion... Why keep "last season's" cushions, dishes etc when there's different colour trending in few months time... Does anyone try to mend, reuse and recycle their old stuff or does it all end up in landfill/charity shops?? I love some vintage items. If I can i give away my stuff to friends or in lockdown I been using "OLIO" app to give my stuff away. It makes me sad thinking about landfills bursting with stuff which sometimes could be reused.
I used to watch that too. There were some brilliant tips on it hit there were things that people did that I thought were just crazy!
I try to save as much money as I can. I mend clothes when I am able to, I don't redecorate or buy new things unless I actually need them and stuff I no longer use or I am getting rid of either get sold on or given away for free. I hate throwing stuff out if I don't have to! My house is full of hand me downs from my parents and second hand stuff bought from fb or gotten for free.
MrsCraig they even worse in USA but yes I remember a guy would use duct tape to repair work boots... or a woman who rationed shampoo for the whole family to a dropI wish they would bring it back...especially with all the batch cooking etc becoming the latest craze...
jurgita0712 the American ones were insane! I remember a women who rationed the toilet paper, in the morning she put out the amount of squares each person could use that day. Or the woman who counted out the amount of cheerios her child could have for breakfast!
I would love them to bring it back too, could do with some tips, especially as the food shop has become more expensive recently.
MrsCraig that's true.. before I loved to shop around.. I would pop to Sainsburys to get few things and then shop in aldi... but now you cant stand there waiting at both so we were shopping at sainsburys...its usually impossible to get delivery booked in with Asda etc.. we definitely need to reduce the cost of food shop.. I saw another family she only has a single lightbulb in the house and keeps moving it to different rooms ..she also cooks lasagna in a dishwasher with dishes!!!
jurgita0712 I remember the woman who cooked the lasagna in the dishwasher! Pure madness!
We were getting deliveries or click and collect with Tesco, and we weren't able to get the value brands or supermarket own that we normally buy.
MrsCraig I tried months ago and then gave up because I couldn't even log on to it...or the delivery wasnt available until the week after... if I write a list and my hubby goes shopping he buys way more than what's on the list and if weeks ago I wanted some coleslaw he'll buy two packs even I might gone off it now since I'm pregnant and my preferences changes daily
jurgita0712 we've been lucky and been able to get deliveries or click and collect slots that were suitable. My husband does that too, comes home with stuff not on the list because he fancied it! Oh I remember pregnancy cravings, wanting something but not knowing what so eating everything! I loved bacon, apricot yoghurt, oranges, prawn cocktail crisps, anything cheese based and God help my husband if he ate something I wanted!
MrsCraig for me one week it might strawberries, then coleslaw, cottage cheese etc all sorts of random foodonce I cried because he forgot to buy strawberries I get it that he wants to treat me but sometimes I dont want any of it anymore if it's not on the list!lol does your hubby ever comes back with wrong things? once I asked for a new dish brush and he bought me that triangle cleaning brush...
jurgita0712 I remember that well, one day you loved something, the next you couldn't stand it! Luckily he has always come back with the right things, just always with a few extras! Well he got the brush part right
MrsCraig but then I'm just as bad because once I wrote kitchen towels when I wanted paper kitchen towelsand he did buy kitchen towels I think my baby brain is already kicking inhes got no excuse though
jurgita0712 my baby brain kicked in early! It used to make the pupils laugh when it kicked in during a lesson. My wee man is 20 months and I still think I have baby brain at times
Loved this program I still have bank book so have to make trips to the bank if I need out so not spending as much as I would if had cards donate what I don't need to a group I'm in on Facebook and also ask for what I need don't buy new stuff unless it really needed and go from shop to shop to find cheeper also don't pay TV licence as don't watch anything and buy from sites where I can get good discounts
jigsawx3x I lost my wallet years ago with cash etc.. since then I barely carry cash and usually I pay card.. but if I need something I'll look for best price online. I recently found out about fb marketplace bought few things of there. I think it's great when people try to recycle and reuse stuff
I remember that show! They should defo bring it back I love these kind of programs. I generally don't throw anything away until it has worn out. I also like to reuse items like once i made a vase out of a Aldi cream pot and then made fake flowers just using paper .. all learnt from YouTube
But I have this really bad tendency to add things to my basket and then puff they are on their way to my doorstep. So that's no good.
Nadiaparveen I like to reuse things too. And crafts.. but the problem is when they start gathering dust and starts looking like clutter..
For me its buying beauty products ..such as creams, shampoos etc. .I got very sensitive skin and quite often it irritates my skin so I can't use it and then give it away...
Imnotcheap it was a show about saving money really. They had a money advisor and other different ones where they would show you how to recycle/make things yourself... for example your own elderflower cordial or how to spruce up some jam jars and turn it into candles or whatever. And it had some stories of superscrimpers and their extreme ways to save money... I actually looked one lady up because she has a blog and she did really do all the stuff that was on the show...like she would buy mens underwear because she thought it was comfier, cheaper and lasted longer, also she wouldn't shower she would have a strip wash to save water etc...
Imnotcheap she did. But she had rather active social life being member of different clubs etc. sometimes it's better to stay single than be in an unhappy relationship..
