All That Talk about Lockdown and Social distancing...

In the News

They don't seem to care, but I'm guessing they'll go on policing people on the web for not wearing masks and whatnot. Virtue signaling.

I particularly don't agree with these protests (some or a lot tend to be looters) because the person they're vouching for was a criminal who pointed a gun at a pregnant woman and you just don't do that, at all. But hey, it's a free country as they say, so they can protest all they want.

Although, David Dorn who was murdered by a looter is never on the news, well, FOX and small ones have covered it, thankfully.

RIP.

We've all spent weeks at home on lock down and just as things look like they are improving all these people pack themselves on these protests , If people want to protest their choice, but at the moment this to me is selfish behaviour putting themselves, their families and others at risk given the Covid circumstances .

Interesting that you're choosing the Black Lives Matter protest to criticise when over the past couple of weeks there have been mass gatherings at beaches and huge street parties for VE day (with drunken neighbours NOT social distancing). It is unfortunate that we are having to protest at such a time, but racism is a brutal killer and it needs to be stopped. Personally I attended a peaceful protest yesterday where all social distancing was well adhered to and almost everyone wore masks. I have not met up with family or friends and have been especially careful during this time, but felt that the BLM protest was too important not to be a part of, I felt safe the entire time and managed to keep a distance from others.

May I add that the Black Lives Matter movement isn't just about George Floyd, it is about hundred of years of racism. Nevertheless, your characterisation of George Floyd still appals me, his murder was the result of inhumane police brutality. He was arrested for using a fake $20, in what world should the punishment for that be death?

Yes, it is an unfortunate time for protesting to be necessary, but there are many large issues at play here. No one is forcing anyone to protest, if you don't want to, you don't have to. But people aren't doing so recklessly, they are going out to protest because there is such a huge issue at play that they are wiling to leave their homes and protest during this time because racism, police brutality and white supremacy need to end now.

lornaae So the actions of the protestors cannot be brought into question? 🤔

TheChimp I'm pointing out many factors that were conveniently left out of the original post. I didn't see a chat topic on here condemning those that were drunkenly dancing with their neighbours in VE street parties, but here we are condemning those gathering to protest for civil rights. It is very unfortunate that we are having to protest during such a time, but it is not for nothing and it's not for fun. It's for an important cause. I have adhered extremely strictly to the lockdown rules, but recognised that this was too important of an issue to not do something about.

As a doctor for the NHS said: "Yes, protesting and mass gatherings are not ideal during a pandemic, but this cannot wait, the racism, hardships and countless deaths that black people have faced have gone on far longer than covid - and if you're using the virus as an excuse to rebuke the protesters and the BLM movement, you are part of the problem." https://www.facebook.com/618074275/posts/10159064199264276/?d=n

lornaae Then you haven't searched properly.

There's a few threads on here having a go at the idiots going to beaches, beauty spots etc.

And that doctor is an idiot too.

TheChimp yes, very irresponsible for a medic, I can't believe they would say that after what his/her colleagues have been through. Many have died, the majority of them BAME so how does that make sense?

Lynibis because people are not out protesting for no reason, and they aren't oblivious to the risks. It is just too important of an issue, we should not NEED to protest and risk our health to do so right now, but unfortunately we do. Because this is a huge issue, you have to understand that. Systemic change is needed and it is needed now, protests are needed and they are needed now.

TheChimp I have seen the ones criticising those on the beaches yes, but none for VE day, and both of those were because people wanted some fun, this is about civil rights. Two very different scenarios. That doctor is hardly an idiot, after facing first hand the effects of covid they are still noting the significance of the BLM movement.

This is another opinion on which I will make no comment but Tbh there are two sides to every story and some interesting statistics towards the end of this speech.

Every debate has a counter debate, but sadly I cannot find anything to disagree with in what she said. Change has accelerated but it always takes time. For goodness sake the Americans had a black Potus and that would have been unthinkable a few years back. I greatly admire him and his wife. The ones who shout loudest are the ones who lead bad lives, whether white or black. As she said, more white criminals have died in police custody.

Lynibis What's true: In absolute numbers, more white people than black people are killed in police shootings (because white people outnumber black people in America). black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers.

Gazz3 maybe you missed the part where it said 13% of the population commit 49% of the crime. However I am not going to debate this issue because I know I am not racist and have always treated all folk equally. But when a black woman can speak up it can't be ignored because others do not want their virtue signalling to be ignored.

60 years ago at primary school my best friend Fancy was black and her mum was my mum's friend. My second husband was mixed race. If we all just judge folk for how they live their lives and not the colour of their skin we might just get somewhere, however, getting that message through to gangs who peddle drugs and stab people is the problem.

Gazz3 If your statement is true, is it because a lot more black people are committing more violent crimes than white people?

Gazz3 In the UK, Black people are also six times more likely to be stop and searched by police. So this is not just an issue in America, racism is ripe in the UK. Source: ONS (Office for National Statistics)

I got caught up in the London protest on Sunday afternoon. I walked through the Victoria and Vauxhall area not realising there was another planned march. I didn't witness any problems, people have a right to protest.

I agree ACR but they do not have the right to loot and commit violence and deliberately turn a peaceful protest into police baiting in order to fit their own agenda. It is inexcusable to throw a bike at the legs of a police horse causing it to bolt through the crowds and cause pandemonium. There has to be a police presence at all protest marches as the stupid element always want to cause trouble.

Lynibis I'm against any form violence or looting occurring at marches. Unfortunately, a lot of people are very suspicious of the police. That may be from personal experience or witnessing decades of abuses such as Rodney King, George Floyd or the recent footage of 2 police officers in Buffalo pushing a 75 year old protester to the ground - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-52952237
