Would you be a Teacher?

One thing homeschooling taught me was I would not like to do it full time. Obviously it would be different teaching other people's kids to your own but not for me

Not for all the money in the world kids are so cheeky now I would blow my top don't know how they do it.

I help to teach a friend’s kids sometimes. They’re homeschooled (and have been for years) but he prefers to have other people teach them some things that he isn’t as good at. I don’t mind teaching them since they almost always want to learn and don’t really make it difficult, but I don’t think I’d want to teach in a school.

No, it really doesn't appeal to me. I don't agree with 'teaching to the test' and wouldn't want to deal with unruly kids. Plus, schools are not getting enough money.

I wouldn't, it doesn't seem like a very rewarding job these days. The way a lot of children behave now is appalling, and the parents don't take any responsibility for it.

I definitely would never like to be a teacher. It’s exhausting work especially for primary schoolers. I’d much rather be a university lecturer.

I’m sure lots of people think it’s easy and they get lots of time off but being a teacher really is not easy. They take lots of work home and continually planning. My daughter in law even has cupboard with food for those sent to school without breakfast (at her own expense). I wouldn’t recommend being a teacher.

I would not like to be a teacher. A lot of members in my family are and try to convince me to go down the same route but it isn't for me. The pay is fantastic. But I have seen how teaching never really ends, you go to school, teach, come home and then spend the rest of the day planning the next day lessons. You have to be hard working and committed to be a teacher. And there are some students who treat teachers terribly, when I was at school my class made my teachers cry often. If a person has thick skin, enjoys watching children grow and improve throughout their time at school then it is the job for you

I always wanted to be a teacher when growing up but then I realised how hard it must be to teach and sometimes even discipline other people’s children day in, day out. If I did I think it would have to be older children, say GCSE/A level age

No. It’s not easy being a teacher, and it’s even harder to do the job when you don’t get the support and I don’t have the patience

My husband and I are both teachers. It is a brilliant job and it is very rewarding, but there are a lot of challenges, most of which have nothing to do with the pupils. We often have full timetables, yet are still expected to write reports, wrote lesson plans, develop new courses, attend lots of different meetings, keep up with constantly changing legislation, mark assessments and the list goes on and on. We often have to bring work home with us and have been known to work during the holidays in order to get everything done. People often complain that we get too many holidays or parents complain at us because their child isn't doing as well as they expect! We can teach 7 periods a day, with 30 kids in class, all of whom have different needs, whether it be learning difficulties, mental health issues, challenging home circumstances etc, all of which we need to be sensitive to and we need to meet all of those needs in 50 minutes, whilst ensuring each pupil meets the learning requirements, dealing with behaviour, providing materials (which we have probably paid for) and a whole lot of other things. We are often stretched very thin and don't get the support we need.

I would love to teach, but with unrealistic provisos! 1. No badly behaved children 2. No classes larger than 20 pupils 3. No unnecessary paperwork!

I love to impart knowledge and would like to teach English and History but I am at least 20 years too late. I get frustrated not being able to discuss my subjects with others but I do tell the kids on transport lots of bits and pieces about history if they show interest, also my grandson.

Unfortunately covid has stopped my talks to Age Concern but I am gratified when my friend texts me and says she got a Chase history question right after listening to me lol.

My neighbour is a teaching assistance. She clearly loves her job but must have the patience of a saint. I couldn't do it x

I wouldn't personally for myself but each to their own.

No...I am qualified, but they do not pay enough

I must admit, I feel uncomfortable being around groups of children so obviously the job wouldn't be for me. I suppose I feel that way because I grew up in an adult household. I was an only child and all of my relatives were older than me. I don't at all hate kids and would perhaps have my own at some point, but I am just used to and prefer adult company.

I would probably however it depends on the behaviour of the students so probably a grammar school

In the traditional sense, no.

I remember that in high school as I was leaving a classroom, the professoress was about to break to cry due to the disrespectful students she had to put up with. Manual labor is a tough job physically while teaching is emotionally and mentally.

Every job/career has its demons.
