Teachers Stopping Kids from Buying Fast Food
In the News
Blimey, a teacher‘s job is never done, not even after school has finished for the day
A bit much? Or necessary?
The store owner pretends like he cares about the kids and young people.. It's about the money.
Anyway, the students want to eat garbage? Let them. The parents should do their job of educating on what they should and shouldn't eat.
I think the biggest problem is that there is no healthy alternative for the same price.
It is everywhere the same, after school kids go to the cheap chicken stores and buy £1.99 or £2.99 deal...can not even get a sandwich deal from that much anymore.
You’re right. Its a shame that healthier options cost more, so there’s no financial incentive for kids or adults to eat better. But I’m not sure about teachers using punishment to try to deter kids from eating fast food. I’m sure i5 just makes it more appealing
Schools should also serve healthier meals for kids at better prices which is affordable for low income families.
I disagree that teachers should have to stop kids before and after school. They are the teachers responsibility during school time only. Poor teachers have enough to do
I agree. I was surprised the teachers were doing this after school hours, although I’m sure they have agreed to do it based on the kids’ welfare
Good on the teachers I wish teachers would also educate children in school more about healthier options and that consequence's of fast food
It certainly needs to be part of the education curriculum, but surely the parents need to be the ones who teach the kids about what food they ought to eat? Although it’s likely that it’s the parents who are the ones who the kids are learning their bad habits from
I don't think the teachers have any right to tell the children what they can and can't do after school hours. It is up to the parents if they wish to tell their children they can not go to a takeaway shop not the teachers. I think they are overstepped their mark. School seem like prisons nowadays to me. I don't know about that 2011 act allowing them to continue to lord it over kids after school. I think teachers should make sure they are spotting things like pupils being dyslexic and having aspergers not worrying about chips. I say that as they NEVER picked up on me being dyslexic or an aspie and yes, I am still angry about it.
Yes, that’s true. I don’t believe everyone is cut out to be a teacher, nor do I believe that it’s an easy job. But if they’re trying to be good teachers, they will be able to spot the kids that need a bit more help, and will act on it
kids will want to eat what they want, and a lot of junk is marketed towards them. Teachers ought to do their jobs and educate - what they are doing here is just punishment, which may make junk food seem even more attractive
I agree. It would never have worked in my area, as the kids will just go further afield to get junk food, and there will be aggression towards the teachers
I think the idea was to cause awareness of what children are eating. And where they are going when you give them lunch money. there are so many young children with health problems.
Awareness is indeed desirable, but I’m not sure kids are being effectively educated in their food options this way. This definitely needs to start at home
Schools should concentrate on doing what they are supposed to do - teach. By all means teach about good healthy eating. but at the end of the day its up to families as to what they eat. We still see far too many pupils coming out of education without the basic skills and yet schools seem to care more about what the pupils eat or how they dress. I still recall the horror when my own son came home from infant school in tears because his favourite chocolate bar had been confiscated from his packed lunch. He was then under weight for his age and yet ended up going all day with nothing to eat because he was so upset. All we got from the school was a badly photocopied scrap of paper explaining about fighting obesity. Still makes me angry!
That sounds awful! so they just took his treat from him? And what did they do with it? Scoff it themselves, I bet!
Yeah school banged on for years lecturing parents on what to provide, when my son was always small& underweight due to being born very premature.his dietician said to feed him up,so i had to keep repeating this to school. Now high schools and colleges dont even provide a proper lunch, its all paninis& burgers etc,and even the 'meal deals' arent cheap enough to provide a lunch, dessert and drink.so much for jamie olivers 'meddling'!
Teachers should teach, not nanny kids after school.maybe the government should re- introduce cookery lessons,or 'home economics' as it used to be,might help kids make better choices that way.
That wouldn't help them. They have chicken and fish fast food chains at basically every corner and god knows if it's even sanitary. Probably not.
I agree. There definitely needs to be more lessons relevant to their lives and their future, which includes knowing the nutritional value of food and where to buy it from. I like it when I read about schools who grow their own veg and kids get in on it - so at least they understand what veg looks like
