Things to Make with Damsons
Ask a Question
We have about a dozen trees in blossom and last year I gave away so many damsons to neighbours and the food bank. I'd like to try and do something with them this year but I'm not a big dessert person and as we have apple and plum trees too I'm normally sick of crumble and pies. So, what can I do when them?
Maybe a nice bit of jam?
Easy enough to do and you'll have something to put on your toast in the morning.
Not really a jam eater though our neighbour has plums and damsons off us and makes jams and chutneys and does give us an odd jar.
When we have a surplus round here we tend to put them in bags & take them to the front gate. Write a label saying what they are and that they are free (or a small charge if you are inclined to charge) and they will disappear....
I've given them away on Facebook, left them in our garden adjacent to the canal so boaters can take them and still have lots!
Could be a good option like cranberry cheese. I'll look into this one - thankyou. Do you have a link for the recipe online?
Damson gin or damson vodka - make in late summer and will be ready for Christmas https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/damson-gin-recipe
Oooh I very much like the idea of damson gin! This would also be great to give away as gifts too.
The link doesn't work, could you please check it or put a space between it and the emoji, thanks
Thanks lilyflower someone always comes to your rescue on here. I just happen to have half dozen kilner bottles I got in a sale a couple of years ago 50p each.
Freeze them, no prep needed and use in crumbles etc in winter. Damson or plum gin is beautiful and very warming
I'm definitely going to try the gin. Would just need to get some bottles or jars to do it. Everyone is doing to get gin this Christmas!
rararachel We used kilner jars for the original 'mixing' in small amounts (just incase we had a bad batch) then decanted in to bottles similar to https://www.lakeland.co.uk/15584/Airtight-Swing-Top-Glass-Gifting-Bottle-250ml they also do a 500ml.
I wish you were my neighbour. We love crumbles, convince myself it’s good for me as one of my five a day. I would part cook the damsons then freeze ready for crumble.
I'm not a huge jam and crumble fan and with the plum, apple, pears and rhubarb we are overloaded!
Did I mention we don't like plums, pears or rhubarb either? We give most of it away and lots of it goes to waste.
rararachel I love rhubarb too but begrudge paying £2 for 3 sticks which really isn’t enough. You could of course box it up and send as food parcels to us in need of home grown fruit.
