What Do You Think about Home School

Other

Hi all just wonder what you think about home school. I've been watching some YouTube in USA and around the world. And most of them do not send there children to school. But tech them at home. They say it's better and safer. Because of gun and knife crime. And I've all so seen it here in the UK that they are teaching them from home. I think it's got it good and bad points. Bad they can't mix with other children the good they are home and you can see them doing well. What do you think about it would you tech your children from home. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

I am a teacher so would be fine teaching my son from home. However, I only have one area of expertise. Home schooled pupils still need to sit exams. So you would need to teach them how to write essays and exam answers and each subject has a different way of answering questions, different ways of structuring answers etc. Plus it isn't just about teaching them information, you need to teach them analysis and evaluation. For example, if your child sits 5 highers, then you need to teach them those 5 highers, plus all the skills needed. You also need to submit evidence of their work to the relevant exam bodies. So if your child does higher maths, unless you are a maths whiz, you would need to get them a tutor. Plus they miss out on learning how to engage with others, how to deal with difficult situations with peers, how to effectively manage their time, how to behave in certain situations etc. I think that unless you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort then home schooling is not the way to go.

I have no problem with home schooling and it is what I would do if I had kids and could afford it. I originally wanted to be a lecturer, so I can handle all subjects bar maths! someone else would have to do that as that is when being dyslexic really becomes a big problem for me. My dad is a bit of a maths savant, so I would he could teach that subject. He did higher maths and loves really complex maths problems.

I know an autistic teenager who prefers it to regular schooling and has come on leaps in her education since her mum switched. However my sister tried it with her kids and they asked if they could go back to school after a year. They wanted to be with their friends.

Unless parents are teachers, how are they going to be taught properly? Plus it's not healthy too be stuck in the house alone without any kind of social interaction. It might be best for a very small minority, but it would put most kids at a big disadvantage in life.

I've come across some home schooled children who are very sociable and at the stage i would expect them to be for their age as their parents are fully committed to their education. For me personally I don't know if i could be that committed - my kids education is important but i hate homework at the best of times.

And look after a teenager 24/7! Not on your Nelly.

I can understand parents wanting to do this is America and probably would be safer. But not here in England. you have to think of their social skills and mixing with others following rules being someone where on time. it all goes towards and helps them when it’s time to get a job. Plus unless you are a teacher could you really teach your child to the level that a school can? school also have the equipment. to me teaching a child at home would hold them back in later life

I think i would of loved it but i hate socialising, but school did help me learn more about people and socialising to an extent. I think kids would miss out on that if being home schooled.
