Their all excited to break up for xmas so probably wouldnt get much work done anyway. I always loved school the last few days before xmas, watching films, eating sweets, having little parties and being able to chat with friends. I think its nice that they let the kids have a few relaxed days.

Yes especially in primary school all the do is watch dvds, my god daughter would rather do school work at school and relax at home not relax at school.

It helps with childcare for children to still be at school, regardless of what the activities are in the run up to Christmas, if they weren't there it could mean extra child sitting costs or taking time off work, not to mention extra food and heating bills, especially with parents that are struggling financially. Some of these children won't have what people call a proper Christmas, presents, food etc. why begrudge them having fun? Children are supposed to have fun at school, a few days out of the year enjoying themselves doesn't hurt and helps with the learning process

I am a teacher and if you think it is difficult to get kids to do school work normally and to behave, then try getting them to do it when they are all hyped up for Christmas. I teach RMPS so we do stuff to do with Christmas and fun learning activities.

School isn't just about learning information to pass exams. It is about teaching them life skills, teaching them responsibility, teaching them how to enjoy learning, helping them bond with their peers, teaching them about consistency. Plus for some children the party they have at school in the last few days might be the best thing that will happen to them over Christmas for a number of reasons, so why take that away.

It was like this when I was at school, with the iconic egg and flour fight after church...I don't think this will ever change

When my 5 children were young and school age ...last days of school were a blessing for the last preperations for food/present shopping and cleaning. It was a break for them to get away from me too...a touch stressed and tired lol 🤣

In terms of school work yes, but it's also a good way for children to relax and have some fun with their friends. Even if the Christmas break started earlier you would still be left in the same situation.

My daughter's in college - it takes her over an half one way to get in on the bus and there's a reasonable walk involved as well. She went in yesterday for the attendance mark. They watched half of a film and she came back again. Waste of time education-wise but she did come back with lots of pressies.
