What Do You Think about Supermarkets Banning Plastic?
Other
This topic really interests me and is one of the top subjects at the moment let’s hear some opinions: for or against and why
I am For banning non biogradadable plastic that can harm the environment. Too many products have tons of unnecessary plastic and manufactured without thought into how the packaging will effect the environment
Can you give examples of what plastics you mean? Bags? Fruit and vegetable packaging? Other plastic?
all plastics where possible especially those that are unnecessary like loose fruit and veg
I think it os good that shops are starting to change to paper bags for loose fruit and veg etc. As long as they provide a suitable alternative I don’t see the harm
I completely agree loose fruit and veg plastic wrapped is not needed, however some people dislike the idea due to minor inconveniences like paper bags can rip but I think the overall bigger picture is more important!
It isn't just the obvious plastic though, teabags for example have a lot of plastic in and when a lot of people put them in their compost bins it has a knock on effect. It isn't just the visible plastic that needs to be banned, it is all plastic
Very true yes I completely agree and recying is difficult and little information on it so I see why people don’t know these things!
Apart from charging customers for carriers, haven't really noticed any change in supermarkets using plastic , Sainsbury's have banned plastic bags for loose fruit and veg, but still selling massive amounts of pre packed fruit and veg in plastic bags , and the loose stuff still comes in plastic crates wrapped in a plastic bag . Notice some supermarket also have stock on warehouse crates wrapped in plastic
Yes that was the first step which was good, however I agree more needs to be done. That's good of Sainsburys but yes if they have banned loose fruit and veg bags but still have pre packed fruit and veg in plastic: is there really much of a point? Hopefully soon they'll remove the pre packed plastic problem. Not good at all supermarkets really need to cut down most of it is unnecessary just done for cheapness and convenience it really needs to be improved sad really
I think supermarkets getting rid of plastic packaging is going to have a much larger impact than plastic straws also think online orders need to cut down on their plastic packaging, as sometimes you get a bag, in a bag, in bubble wrap, in another bag...
I agree supermarkets are heavily filled with unnecessary plastic so we need to target them as well as plastic straws! Most certainly, and with the online industry growing the problem is only getting worse!!...
I think it is a good idea, it annoys me that when I buy cucumber for my son it is in plastic! And prepacked fruit and veg don't need to be in plastic. I try to recycle as much as I can and try to buy as little plastic as I can but it is so expensive! They should do something to help encourage people use less plastic. Like extra points on your loyalty card so you get some extra money off, not everyone sees plastic reduction as essential so it might help those that are reluctant. I know supermarkets have to cater to everyone, but can they not just get rid of all unnecessary plastic and then people will have no choice but to use less plastic.
Completely agree it’s very wasteful of companies to put plastic on things when it’s not needed. It is so expensive and sad because as a consumer i feel like I’m responsible but really I try to recycle where I can and buy sustainability however supermarkets really don’t help us! And very good Idea I think supermarket should help those that want to be sustainable but yes I guess supermarkets are more in it for the money sadly and have to acconter All costumers.
RiannonWood it is to do with the suppliers too, they need to stop putting plastic on everything, especially plastic that can't be recycled! I know food needs to be transported so they need to keep it fresh but there must be other ways to do so, it is probably more expensive so would reduce profits and that's why they don't do it. My son is only one but I'm trying to teach him early, so he helps me to put the plastic into the recycling bin, he enjoys holding the plastic and the noise it makes when it falls.
MrsCraig Very true they are the source of the supermarkets. Yes I have heard of many alternatives to plastic however they are expensive so I think your 100% correct! And what a great idea, it's good to introduce these problems to the next generations early on, as it's them who will see the consiquences more.
RiannonWood if they all started using the alternatives then surely it would bring the price of production down? He loves playing with the bottles before they go in. If it wasn't for my husband and his Pepsi addiction, we wouldn't buy that many plastic bottles.
I think all plastic bags in the fruit and veg section should be changed to paper bags. Also I think it's all well and good to stop supplying plastic carrier bags with online shopping but stores should take a leaf out of Morrisons book and at least offer the customer a chance to buy paper carrier bags. It's a nightmare when a week's worth of shopping turns up in plastic boxes that need emptying quickly so that the poor delivery man can get going.
I completely agree the fruit and veg section is one of the worst for unnecessary plastic, and yes they most certainly should do that very good of Morrisons for taking the lead on that! And I bet supermarkets need to come up with ways like Morrisons to make it as convenient and environmentally friendly!!
There’s not a lot of information on plastics and I have just found out things I didn’t know from reading these posts. Its like all the focus on the supermarkets but really it should be focusing on the source. Ban plastic altogether and come up with a different way. We really need to start thinking about our planet. Our poor children/ grandchildren will feel the effects our generation have created. I never really thought about this or cared enough about it till now. You can feel climate change and the different kind of germs that are around now are awful. All 3 of my children suffer from croup and one has asthma, I know asthma had been around for a while but so many children and adults have respiratory problems. The worlds changing so fast under our nose. it’s up to the higher power to try and enforce a better future for the next generation.
There really isn't and I've learnt so much from posting this!! Very true actually, then there is no excuse for supermarkets!! I have heard of people asking packaging out of grass and apparently its working well but none of it is really hitting the stores and before long its too late. also a lot of the plastic alternative materials are expensive to produce so companies don't want it. Completely agree we need to stop putting our cheapness and conveniences first and think of the earth! Same I never used to think about my plastic footpath but it now is very scary and yes very true its all happening too fast for us. Yes really all we can do is do our part and we have climate change marches petitions but its up to those of high power to help the future generations. Sad really....
I think it's ridiculous that something like bananas come in a plastic bag, bananas naturally have their own packaging and naturally keep together. It's so unnecessary.
They need to get the customers on board though. If you go into any large supermarket you will usually see lots of fruit & veg loose that shoppers can choose - but most will happily pickup a pre-wrapped bag as its so much more convenient. The other thing is that food is wrapped in plastic to help it last longer. We get most of our veg from Riverford Farms so its free from plastic - it tastes great - but it doesn't last half as long- some veg going off before we get chance to use it.
