How Much Do You Tip & When?

Ask a Question

I'm interested to know how much people tip & what services you tip for? I usually give a tip to restaurants / take away drivers & taxis. I usually tip £2.00 or £3.00. Do you automatically tip or only tip for good service?

I leave tips normally a couple of pound for them all. If the taxi driver goes the longest way possible though i won’t tip.

No I wont either if a Taxi driver does that. My dad would argue with the drivers who did that.

It's no wonder they're losing to Uber.

Rockman we dont have Uber where I like because it’s actually cheaper to get a taxi. it’s just the odd driver that tries to pull a fast one

My barber charges £7.50 for a standard haircut and always give him a £10 note and let him keep the change.

My OH does the same. Except his cut costs £8.50.

A £2.50 tip is pretty good. Considering, the customer isn't required to give anyway.

I am on a low wage so I don't tip unless I feel the person is on same or lower rate. I work regularly with a taxi driver who earns more in a week than I do in a month so wouldn't tip even if I used them.

Yeah, I definitely leave tips, I tip taxi drivers, takeaways, restaurants, it's always nice to leave a tip, the people always appreciate the tip, the little extra money will add up if everyone else leaves tips for them.

I'm on benefits...I have very little spare money ...but if on a rare occasion I'm out ...on my birthday or I'm getting treated I always tip for good service. People working for really low wages depend on tips.

I agree to tip if you get good service in a restaurant and hope they go into a kitty to share with the kitchen staff. After all it’s the kitchen who prepare and cook the meals.

I never do electronic tipping because perhaps wrongly I assume the restaurant itself takes some of that tip rather than the staff getting all of it. I don't tip much. I tend to go for bargain meals out that end up about £15 or less and typically tip a £1 less than 10%. I go to wetherspoons a lot and never tip in there or see anyone else tip either after a meal.

I give a tip if I recieve really good service when out for a meal. My husband tips the barber when he gets his hair and beard done. We only have the one wage coming in at the moment so if we eat out it is at our local Morrisons.

I tip in restaurants if I think the food or service has been excellent but I don’t just tip everywhere for the sake of it. also tip the hairdressers too :-) other than that don’t really tip much!

I hardly ever tip. I made an exception New Year's Day to the RAC - he got a fiver for a hot drink.

I don't believe in tipping, but do it sometimes.

We don't need to tip here. People are paid more fairly than in America, where this has come from. They need the tips to survive.

I tip here if I get great service in a restaurant.

Never tipped a driver, and I'd not tip for bad or average service.

I avoid any fee service offered like having bags carried to rooms, in case they expect a tip (not sure if they do?).

I don't as I usually don't have coins around unless necessary. I'd not mind giving a pack of spaghetti or rice, though.

Not a fan of tipping, especially if just for a friendly and efficient service, which is expected. However, I’d part with £2 or £3 for most places that don’t charge a service on top. I try to go places less expensive and very casual, so the tip expectancy isn’t so high

If we eat out it's generally very casual. I'm quite happy to tip & do frequently when Im happy with service & if enjoyed my meal, but i really dislike service charges. I see that as forced tipping.

Glitterandgold it is, and it is awkward when you ask for them to remove it - I once went for a drink with a friend at a hotel (her choice!) and they added 12.5% even on a drink...she just asked for the barman to remove it (she said she’d leave a tip, but not for 12.5%).

Usually around £2 or £3 but £5 for a takeaway on christmas Eve.

I still stick to 10% as much easier to calculate but restaurant bills usually come with 12.5% service charges. I don’t usually tip taxi drivers as it’s a pay by card system or use Uber.

In the UK never as it is not a country that basis wages on tips such as the USA.

I am currently beyond broke due to disability and unable to work BUT I never tipped and never will in the UK.
