"UK Braces for Blackouts"

In the News

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-09/uk-braces-for-blackouts-gas-cuts-in-january-in-emergency-plan

The UK is planning for several days over the winter when cold weather may combine with gas shortages, leading to organized blackouts for industry and even households.

I thought we lived in a first world country and if this does happen, it's unacceptable!

I'm talking this with a grain of salt since the media also overhyped the summer weather as "extremely hot heat waves" when it was just the typical warm weather in other countries during, you know, the summer.

I really hope we don't have blackouts but not surprised if we do have them.

The reason energy prices are rising is supply and demand and the fact supply is dramatically reducing. If the price increases on their own don't cause people to massively reduce their consumption then its pretty logical blackouts may happen.

I can't imagine blackouts ever happening in this country, let alone in 2022 and beyond.

It’s not the first time blackouts have been mentioned in the news so it does seem likely as quite a few experts are predicting.

Pjran energy blackouts would potentially damage electrical items. The fridge can handle it, but gaming consoles and external hard disks it can be harmful for power to go out unexpectedly.

CA had or still does:

So do you mean they would just shut us all down and he have to keep ourselves warm however possible?

SaveMeSunday they would be scheduled blackouts, so they would happen at a set time each day. Everyone will be trying to reduce their gas and electric use any way, so it might not happen.

Reading the article it seems this is a worst-case scenario they're planning for (as you'd perhaps hope they would!) but they don't expect it to happen if that makes sense

Hope we get a refund on the standing charge, lots of people will have a financially imposed blackout. Would not expect anybody to be using power freely this winter, so probably will never happen.

It's perhaps not generally understood that at times (when there is little wind for instances) over 10% of our electricity comes from Norway via the "Interconnector Cable" . Norway, because of their vast hydro electric projects , usually has plenty of electricity to export and it forms an important part of their economy .

However the European wide drought we are seeing has also affected Norway and they too are experiencing a lack of water to power the turbines in their many dams . The result is Norway are already considering domestic electricity rationing (most heating in Norway is electric as it's so cheap) . Obviously before they bring that in they will cut to the contractual minimum the electricity they export to us .

Just another snippet of info to add to the depressing "larger picture " .

Golfforall Hopefully Norway will be sorted in the winter months, it is a very depressing time. I would normally be complaining about the heat today but will save my complaining until winter. Between the strikes and blackouts I will probably have lots of free time.

Howmuch We need an inventor to get on it . I don't like it too hot or too cold . Could do with a way of syphoning off all this heat and storing it till Winter 😀.

Golfforall I am thinking about going into my garden and filling lots of balloons with warm summer air to keep for winter. I have already filled dozens of hot water bottles with boiling water before the energy cap increases, enough to take one to bed each night in December, January and February. If everyone planned ahead like me we would all be ok, sectioned under the mental health act in a nice warm padded room.

I am taking all of this with a pinch of salt. Whilst it COULD happen, it most likely won't.

I ordered some smokeless coal to be delivered next week. I have the central heating on all day (not during heatwave) and love the glow of the open fire.

I have lots of candles and am quite happy without tv and pc. Grew up during the winter of 79 and untold power cuts .I can play guitar in the dark as well .Seriously though. It's not where we should be.

I just worry about the freezer if we have power cuts.

Besides we should be having any power cuts at all - we aren't a third world country!
