Universities May Go Bust

In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52237664

Universities across the UK are calling for emergency funding of at least £2bn, warning some institutions will go bust without it.

Universities UK says the coronavirus pandemic is threatening to sharply cut overseas student numbers and put universities in financial danger.

I’m not surprised by this, but at the same time, perhaps it may be a good thing to allow some institutions to permanently close? After all, some degrees are worthless, with a lot of students ending up in debt instead of leading lucrative careers as a result of obtaining their degree - and job prospects perhaps won’t be so great in the near future

If they need that much to stay afloat, that money is perhaps best spent elsewhere

After they increased tuition fees by so much years ago, how can they go bust? They jumped from £3,000 to £9,000 in a year. How have they not massively profitted from that?

I doubt it. Nothing is ever free, and when things are free, usually you will find the quality is worthless - why flood the Unis with people when most of them can start their careers without a degree?

I believe that university should be free

I don't think they need to be prioritised. There are other businesses and institutions that need the money that the communities will benefit greatly from. Not everyone benefits with having a degree

I agree. Aside from a few professions, there’s loads of jobs out there not requiring the applicant to have a degree

hspexy with the gloomy economic outlook, a lot of young people will have no choice but to work to survive rather than study and get into debt with a degree

ptenn00 yes that’s a very gloomy outlook! But true. Tbh the prospects of going to uni wasn’t great before all this, which is a shame. But as mentioned, not all jobs require degrees

This doesn't just apply to universities though. All companies, of any kind, large and small are not earning but still have outgoings (rates etc) and this means that the whole world's economic situation is in real and imminent jeopardy. We should all be concerned about this. Many businesses are calling on the government to bail them out and this just isn't feasible, sadly the government will probably bow to the pressure they get from larger companies but all the smaller companies will be left to flounder and go under. Sometimes the cure (keeping people confined to their homes and not spending) can be worse than the disease in the long run?! Doesn't anyone else think that the virus isn't going to go away just because we stay in our homes. It will still be out there when we are eventually allowed out and will catch us all again and again!!

tumblespots So where is this virus going to hide if everyone self isolates and can't pass it on?

TheChimp It would only work if everyone was on lockdown throughout the world at the same time and for long enough. People are allowed to buy food, medicines etc and you get delivery drivers and postmen to your house. With the best will in the world there are always those who, for whatever reason, will go out anyway or not even observe the 2 metre rule so clearly the virus will not die. Just like when you get a cold or flu, you may get better but there is always another one ready to knock you down. Let's face it they can't even cure the common cold or flu and they've been around for years..... Do you think they will have a vaccine for this anytime soon?! They don't know enough about this virus to state that it will die of it's own accord and personally I don't believe that it will. You may think differently? 🐞

Mango4 Thank you for your support Mango4 I am glad it's not just me that thinks it's a complete mess. I don't think enough thought went into the decision to 'lockdown' There are people out there who haven't any savings, who now have no income either and are finding it extremely difficult to survive as little help is forthcoming (even though it is promised). Given that business are probably failing they may not even have a job to go back to either. On top of that the country was already struggling financially, having been in austerity for years, so where it is going to get all this money to pay people 80% of their wage/salary, let alone the money to bail out businesses? What we need is a leader, not someone who is scared to make a decision and is waiting for someone else to come up with a solution so that they can start blame shifting afterwards! Politicians aren't what they used to be. We have no statesmen anymore. All they seem to want to do is gentle posturing and talk, talk, talk but not actually do anything or make any decisions. 🐞 (Sorry for the rant)

I agree. Tbh I didnt think we would have a lockdown, judging by how the press and MPs were earlier on. Herd immunity, wasnt that the initial plan? But then the lockdowns happened in the EU and the UK bowed down to the pressure, even though the ‘lockdowns’ were not properly done, not in the ways to fully contain the virus (they still allow flights in and out the country - and they wonder why it’s spreading?)

hspexy That's exactly it. They waited to follow what other countries were doing, rather than making decisions themselves. I heard about the herd immunity too but after listening to the other world leaders they changed their minds and put us into 'lockdown'! I agree totally about the flights and cannot believe that they are continuing, as far as I am concerned all flights should be stopped, by carrying on they are just asking for trouble... 🐞

I can't believe that flights are still allowed into the UK.
