I was looking for some wall fire protection for my computer when I came across these vpn products.

What are they? And why would people use them?

All I know about VPNs is that sometimes you may want to use them to change your location, if for example a website is only available for US, you can use a VPN to access it. I think they monitor your internet usage though and I don’t know where that data goes!

Virtual private network, it gives you extra privacy on the internet masking your location etc. A popular VPN is nordvpn and many torrent downloaders use a vpn to hide the fact they are downloading the latest shows from their ISP. The VPN I use regularly is the free VPN built into Opera so I can access US web sites that normally prevent me in the UK from viewing or buying from them.

If you just want to hide your internet use data being utilised by companies you can use a search engine like duckduckgo. Google makes heavy use of your data for profit. Google makes $92 million profit every day from the data of its users of which there are 1.7 billion approx so they earn about 5 cents per day from your data. Of course google has many other revenue streams including adverts, services and products.

Back in 2018 I bought a lifetime license of Windscribe VPN and it was a good investment. They have been improving ever since and now there's even more locations available.

VPN basically means you can switch your IP to anywhere in the world. And by that, you can access websites which are currently blocked in U.K. due to the EU (e.g. Chicago Tribune).

If you'd like to give Windscribe VPN a try, you can. Free users get 20GB per month and allowed to experience the pro version for like a day or so.
