Waiting 9 Hours in A&E

Other

Me and my mum waited 9 hours in A & E for her constant chest tightness. The nurses have been lovely and doing the best they can ❤️ but I could tell by their conversations that they were dreading "the drunks" .. it's so annoying and disappointing that Friday nights mean hell for our paramedics and nurses. I could hear one intoxicated man swearing away at the professionals and another tried to escape by pretending to need the toilet! These selfish individuals take up a big portion of the waiting time and I could tell the nurses have just had enough!

Before my Dad died last year we had reason to take him to A&E on a Friday night.

It was horrendous, drunks trying to pick fights in the waiting room, people deciding the whole extended family should accompany them, and the poor staff looking terrified.

I had to take someone to a&e one night there was security guards sat around waiting for potential trouble. Seriously ill people and their loved ones are distressed enough without idiots. In local children a&e they have a strict 1 adult policy

I hope your Mum is OK.

I must admit when I have been waiting to be seen in A&E, I have been shocked at the amount of abuse NHS staff have to put up with.

It's disgraceful. I think they need to start handing out fines to members of the public that are intoxicated and abusive to NHS staff. The NHS needs the money, it might even help fund higher wages for staff.

Midnightflower NHS has money, plenty of it in fact, but it's being used for other means...

9 hours isn't too bad we had friends waiting for 14 hours last week. It should be 3 or 4 hours wait 9 hours is ridiculous, something has to change.

I hope that your mum is OK. I've seen programmes before about some of the harassment nurses etc face from drunken members of the public. It just isn't acceptable

MrsCraig she's doing a bit better .. they hinted it is gastritis but couldn't give her anything until she provides a stool sample.

I went to out of hours as had awful pain in right side of tummy and feverish, she said probably appendicitis and said to go to a&e , 8 hours in a&e, had blood taken, then had to come back rhe next morning for a scan, I waited 7 hours for the scan, then has surgery within 2 hours. Yeah the waits were long but all I heard was people whinging at the nurses, people shouting and threatening to leave, if you're well enough to threaten to leave then bugger off home. One drunk was effing and blinding about the lack of free snacks available, I felt so bad for the staff , they were so apologetic about the wait and revlcieved no thanks

Yes but we need money to fight Ukraines war and to take care of the World in 5 star hotels! This is way mors important than fixing the NHS!

Well there is taxpayers money, but they decide to send to help anyone but British people and that includes the NHS.

DMS1977 If only it was tax payers money, they borrow a huge chunk of it and that's why there is over £3k of interest payments per year for every working person just to pay the interest on our national debt. So many people are now idealistic and not realistic and its causing huge damage to our economy. Much worse austerity is to come sadly as such debts are becoming more and more crippling.

As for drunks in A&E I feel they are going to have to have some sort of doorman and security to prevent such people entering A&E and laws that ban drunks and druggies from A&E. They are putting the safety of others in A&E as well as nurses and doctors at risk and so shouldn't be allowed.

A&E is a total mess. Most of the staff just chatting away paying no attention to patients. I find them rude and aggressive apart from one or two. Patients can be screaming in pain they're just walk by. I used to buy into give nurses a pay rise but after the experience of witnessing them I would rather suggest a pay decrease. The paramedics are generally excellent.

I know exactly what you mean about A&E.

MrsChimp had a terrible experience there. The staff were just talking about their holidays when she was on the floor in pain.

I had a crappy experience when I was on a ward too. The nurses didn't do anything except chat at the nurse's station. It was an 'It's not my job' situation.

But you have to take the bad with the good.

I'm genuinely scared that people will lose their lives during the junior doctors strike as they won't be able to receive the care they need, things are bad at the moment, how on earth will A&E manage during a 3 day walk out.

Junior doctors in England will strike on 13, 14 and 15 March, the British Medical Association has announced.
