Weddings on a Budget

Id start with a list of things you definitely must have at your wedding, for me all the things people have today selfie booths, sweet carts, favours were really just not important to me and so I cut them out! Then ask yourself do you know anyone who can do things like hair/makeup that may be able to help as a wedding present?

Also for centrepieces/decorations if you’re doing that yourself look for second hand ones Or make your own. I got mine off a website called sellmywedding - it’s definitely worth a look.

Figure out what kind of wedding you want and what is an absolute must have that you wont compromise on. Also figure out what your budget is. Figure out how much you can afford to spend on the whole thing, so the venue, food and drink, transport, photographer, entertainment, dresses, suits, shoes, cake, hair, make up, nails etc and then give each section a maximum budget. I did that and found it really helped. I planned mine and my mil wedding and did both on a budget and still had money left over from both budgets!

We both got married during the week and we saved a fortune. Our photographer was £500 less, our venue was £300 cheaper and I bought loads of stuff in the sales.

If you don't mind having second hand stuff look on your local fb selling place or gumtree for things like wedding dresses, centerpieces, bridesmaid dresses etc as they will be much cheaper. Warren James is good for inexpensive jewellery, I got mine and mil from there.

Look in department stores and sample sales for wedding and bridesmaid dresses. If you have any friends who are hairdressers/make up artists/nail technician/cake maker see if they can do it for you at mates rates or as their wedding present to you, we did this and again saved a lot of money. Don't mention it is for a wedding when booking anything, especially the cake. Say it is for a party, like a birthday and it will be much cheaper.

When my sister married, my oldest son did the photos, my youngest son (then a chef) and I did the food, the reception was at their home and I performed the marriage ceremony as my office allowed me to be deputised for one day to sister's own register office.

We kept the last bit a secret and my dad nearly fell off his chair when I went up to do the honours!

All in all cheap as chips and just as memorable.

I’ve just watched BBC1 The One Show, a local church offered a whole wedding including reception for one thousand pounds. It was absolutely fantastic. The congregation supplied and organised everything. Let’s hope other C of E churches follow suit.
