What's the Most Important Thing in a Relationship
Ask a Question
I'm interested in everyone's views. What do you think is vital in a relationship?
I think it's TRUST.
telmel Oh I see where your coming from but I think its trust because otherwise couples will doubt each other and become jealous then they will feel unloved and not worthy. They're self confidence and self-esteem in themselves me get low.
Yes, it has to start with love otherwise you would surely not be in the relationship in the first place, or you shouldn't be. I agree with trust but would suggest loyalty as that really should encompass trust and fidelity.
But there really is not just one thing, it's a mix of lots of things.
It may sound petty but I could not be with someone who drank too much, smoked, swore like a trooper and squandered their money, so all the love and trust in the world could not make me overcome those vices.
Lynibis I agree with you. It's a mix of things. It's have a good relationship and for it to last. It can't be just one thing.
To me its not just trust but its a huge part . To me its support , its following the vows you say ,its waking up each day and being grateful of what you have and never ever take for granted being with your best friend .
stuartsmith544 you have a really good point. I never thought about it that deep before as im not in a relationship myself but soon will be.
Justshopping Hope your as lucky as me . Its worth the hard work and the hurdles you face to see a smile on your partners face and as I said before never ever take for granted .
stuartsmith544 I haven't had many friends in my life. The ones that I did. Their true faces came out in the end. I will not take my partner for granted and would want to make him happy and take care of him. Thank you!
Justshopping I know what you mean , I won a large prize on the postcode lottery in 2017 and trust me some of the people who I thought were friends turned out to be not nice people .
Trust, honesty and love. I could make a huge list of those to avoid, gambling and drinking excessiveply.
Pjran I completely agree with you. I guess you and your partner have to be stable and mentally okay. If you or your partner were abusive there's only so much one could take.
eyeballkerry wonderingsoul I think both trust and honesty go hand in hand together. You can't have one without the other.
Along with trust it has to be being truthful. But then this is me in general, I can not stand people telling lies. They generally slip up in the end.
Leannexxx I hope he means having sex with you only. Maybe try asking him what he thinks is important in a relationship.
Justshopping I know it's only with me lol and I know what's really important to him this family and doing anything to make it work because he's scared for losing me and the kids told him I'm not going anywhere we have been together 11 years now but he still worries
Leannexxx That's really sweet. Most guys don't show their emotional side of themselves. I hope im as lucky as you.
It takes more than one aspect to retain a solid relationship. Love, friendship, intimacy, trust, honesty, support, faithfulness & communication are all equally important.
Glitterandgold I completely agree with you. I hadn't thought deep enough about it. Reading everyones opinion tells me that It can just be one thing. It's got to be a mixture of things.
Trust and consideration are two biggies. Even if you love someone, the relationship will become toxic without trust.
gerrykelly25 Absolutely true. It's really hard because I think everything plays a huge part in a relationship such as trust, consideration as you stated but also love itself, being supportive, being able to communicate and being honest.
For me it takes more than one thing to keep a relationship together. You need trust and honesty, but you also need to support each other, not take each other for granted, you need to communicate, there needs to be intimacy, which comes in many forms, you need to be faithful to each other, which involves more than just not cheating on each other, you need to stand up for each other, friendship is really important, sometimes you might need to compromise, you need to be committed to your relationship, you need to respect each other and you need love.
MrsCraig Absolutely. Reading everyones comment as well as yours makes me realise that it can't be just trust thats important there's many things that you stated that are equal to that. You said respect and I believe that its a huge part as well.
Justshopping relationships change over time, so there are lots of things that are important and that are needed to maintain that relationship.
MrsCraig I agree. I guess it depends on individuals. How individuals handle the relationship. For example, they might have a bad day at work and may take it out on their partner without realising it.
Pppathome I'm really sorry to hear that. I think the pandemic and financial worries have caused a lot of relationship issues for people. My parents have been together for 48 years and have been through a lot in that time. For them communication was key and understanding how the other felt. I really hope you get things sorted.
Justshopping every relationship is different and only the people in that relationship really know what is going on.
What do you think is vital in a relationship?
I think it's two people. Otherwise there isn't one
Then kindness.
Johnny well.. we’re assuming we are talking about human relationships and not the one we have with our pets!
I agree with you ahaha. No one person can be in a relationship by themselves. It takes two people to be in a relationship.
Respect would be the most important thing to me in any relationship. Unless my wife disagrees , in that case it is compliance.
Howmuch i agree with this. Without Respect i think it would be hard to love and trust someone, infact you probably wouldnt get into a relationship if you didnt respect them.
No one has mentioned UNDERSTANDING yet, if two people can't understand each other, or no attempt is made to understand each other, then most relationships are doomed.
davidstockport good spot David. Yes that's one of the most important thing. Is to understand. Without understanding the relationship will not last.
Respect, trust, honesty, communication commitment and love and as davidstockport says understanding
tara73ziva I now believe all of those things are equally important to each other in a relationship. One can't work without the other so they are all equally important.
tara73ziva I'm glad you could understand what I meant about "understanding", I realised after posting that even Elvis appreciated people who could understand him.
Sing the song El....
Making me laugh
Cooking something nice I burn salad
Buying the wine
And just giving me a wink in the evening and a cuddle on the settee ***
Oh
And putting up with my sense of humour
