What's People's View on strike Action ?

Ask a Question

I was wondering other people's opinion on all the strike action going on.

In my opinion I have a lot more sympathy for all the carers out there, working for minimum wage.

The problem is that unless you do something drastic like striking then no one pays attention. But if you do strike people have a negative opinion. I understand people wanting a higher wage just now with everything going up.

MrsCraig thank you for responding. I just struggle watching people who work 12 hours a day, caring for people getting minimum wage. After covid I really thought that would of changed.

The striking hurts a lot more joe public than it does their bosses 🙈.

Lets hope they all have a quick resolution 😊

As strikers aren’t paid unless they take annual leave they are out of pocket and not everyone can afford to take action. Some unions aren’t taking that into consideration.

Pjran thank you for your response.

With the prices of everything going up so dramatically, a days wages lost at the moment, can be crippling.

wyal5 people can’t go against their unions and colleagues because they’ll be called scabs.

Bargainhead thanks for telling me, I didn’t know that. That must be a nightmare for the union to set up a payroll.

Pjran shouldn’t be to hard as people pay union by direct debit so they have everyone’s details or took out of wage so just reverse it..

Bargainhead I appreciate they’ll have their bank accounts but to pay people they would have to deduct tax and NI etc

100% sympathy and support . I stood on the door and clapped and the NHS for example have been took for granted by the government even before the present administration . Imagine how people would react if someone came up with the idea of linking pay rises of NHS staff or other public servants to MP's pay . So if an "independent " authority decided public pay went up do u think the MPS would accept a 1% payrise . The strikers have put up with 1% payrises for 12 years and 2022 is the year these people said enough is enough .

stuartsmith544 I used to have huge respect for the NHS, but as years have passed they've gotten progressively worse.

And the whole clapping for NHS was also very weird like something straight from a cult than being done naturally.

Those who genuinely do their job, I got nothing against them obviously, rather it's how poorly mishandled it has become.

I get it. So many struggling financially right now. I agree wages need to increase across all sectors. NHS staff striking at this time tho when waiting lists are so long makes me very uncomfortable.

I believe many nurses are suffering burn out I know this bc my best friend is a nurse. Increasing wages won't solve that problem tho, we need more NHS staff.

No sympathy for them what so ever, I get they want more money, but If wages match inflation the problem worsens and Inflation goes up. Those on minimum wage and low paid jobs are even worse off.

train drivers are on 60k but want more, average nurses salary 35k (that’s average) and want more you then have a carer working 4x12 hour shifts for 24k and can’t strike as on minimum wage.

Royal Mail are striking and they are laying a load off next year due to lost revenue. this happened years ago as well, with the port workers they kept striking so the company just moved ports.

union fat cats cause misery for the public and strikers but they don’t lose out..

The trouble is if its public sector pay then its funded by more borrowing which means all of us pay higher interest payments and more services are cut back because more interest is being paid. So nurses get more money but then later there are less nurses being employed due to NHS cutbacks. The country is getting poorer with much higher debts and forcing the government to spend more in one area means much less in another or more borrowing. I think this will just accelerate us towards an IMF bailout sadly. That in no way doesn't mean I don't understand that nurses are facing a huge reduction in their living standards. I personally feel pay banding should be much tighter with entry level wages a bit higher and the highest wages much lower and the banding inbetween much tighter. Pay scales are so ridiculous sometimes. Someone goes from mid-managment to top management and they suddenly get an extra £50k its just ridiculous to me how wages scale and the reason that happens is because they people at the top either decide on those wages or can influence the people that decide them. Wages should be set by a panel formed from the general public for public sector services. You'd probably have wages then that start at £30k and end at £60k rather than the ridiculous wages we see nowadays for top people in the NHS.

The highest paid person in the NHS is on almost 1/4 million yet the NHS is a deeply wasteful organisation with a huge amount of inefficiencies. Surely to merit such a wage would mean tackling these issues successfully.

A lot of individuals wages have not kept up with inflation for many years while the demands on workers have increased. Hope the strikes helps and wages Increase for people.

Sack the 80% of the administration staff in the NHS or reduced their pay down to £25,000 maximum. Problem solved. Most of the strikers are anti Tory and pro-Labour supporters being paid to strike.
