Why is Envy/jealous Green ?

Ask a Question

I was reading and the author used the phrase green eyed monster, you automatically know they were talking about jealousy. So I thought why green ?

I also thought what other colours do we associate with emotions:

Red = anger, red mist ...

Blue= depression, I'm feeling blue

Can you think of any others ?

I

Emerge11 It is funny how we associate colours will emotions, I always thought of yellow as being a happy colour until @Lynibus reminded me of is association with lack of bravery in old John Wayne westerns he was always calling someone "yellow bellied"

I do find colours change my mood. I have just purchased a colourful dress and when wearing it, I do feel happier. Odd really. But I do think when you are well dressed you have more confidence.

I believe it has to do with an overproduction of bile.

MelissaLee1 Thats correct M as it says here

Sources say that early Greeks interchanged “green” and “pale” to mean sickly. The Greeks thought that when you were ill or jealous, the body produced too much bile, giving the skin a green tint.

Well I guess if they were represented by any other colours we would ask the same question. For me, yellow always represented cowardice, hence, cowardly cowardly custard in the school playground. Although it was often pronounced without the L.

Historically purple represented royalty and no one other than the monarch (maybe also queen and kids) were allowed to wear it.

I suppose grey means murky, dull and unclear as in it's such a grey day today.

He/She is in a black mood speaks for itself.

You mention green, which can also mean 'go' or feeling sick, hence the green puking emoji.

Yeah I’ve always wondered why we associate certain colours with emotions. Some make sense such as yellow for happy or yellow for danger but others don’t seem to such as green for envy

Pink is seen as girly and soft and it's feel good just like yellow .. yellow feels happy and positive. White is seen as pure and gentle.

Nadiaparveen also pink is happy as in "tickled pink"

It’s a weird one but there are also double meanings for at least some. Like red has connotations of anger but also of love.
