Why is It That Healthy Food Tastes so Awful

Other

Trying so hard to eat a healthy diet but am really struggling to do it without loads of carbs or sauces.

For lunch every day this week I have had a tea plate with watercress (meant to be a super food but tastes vile), cucumber, ham, cheese and cherry tomatoes. The last three fine, but have to force down first two.

A meal doesn't seem like a meal without potato, bread, rice, pasta, pastry etc. As I am a sensible adult I eat stuff I don't like.....spinach, bananas, lettuce, celery etc but no enjoyment so failure is always round the corner.

Any suggestions for tasty food that is diabetes friendly?

My mum had diabetes and was told to eat what she wants but in moderation one thing I do remember she use to eat fatty fish with vegetables but she got help from a dietician

I imagine that maybe your mum's diabetes levels are not too high, is she on meds? I am being told to be strict with carbs and sugar and I did manage to manage it myself for several years but knew that eventually I would need the meds. Maybe I can reverse again if I try really hard.

Tonight is 'friend round for dinner night' so we are having my home made chicken curry with Bombay potatoes AND rice lol, also some bought onion bhajis. Once a week treat or else you would go barmy depriving yourself all the time.

L , i can only comment on some things i eat and drink to help keep the weight off

First, i have a large portion of porridge for breakfast first thing in the morning with a spoon of honey , the experts say a filling breakfast will stop you going hungry during the day

It works for me and i dont eat lunch , just a banana and apple and some nuts

My other secret weapon is white tea, i have posted about this earlier in the year, its got so many health benefits its too lengthy to list, please just google it to see, but one strange benefit is weight loss

I cannot prove that its this combination that is helping , its only what i find works for myself

Sorry ,I just realised you want advise on diabetes friendly foods L, not just diet

I am not with it this morning

Thanks. I do drink herbal teas and have now cut out all sugar (again), sometimes with a little honey in the tea as it is natural and not refined sugar. I can't physically eat until about noon as I find that once I start eating I find it hard to stop and it just gets my stomach growling for more! I am currently doing what I said above for lunch and then I eat a good evening meal with carbs as you have to get your energy from somewhere and a daily portion is allowed. I am finding it works for me but it is hard to stop the cravings for carbs and sugar.

Lynibis Yes i know what you mean L, but i find a banana or other fruits help to satisfy the sugar craving

I think part of losing weight is not to punish yourself too much , have a little of what you want

I love chocolate and i can never resist buying a bar at the supermarket

Thank goodness thats mainly only once a week 😇

Leannexxx Gosh, there are is so much conflicting advice from medics. I was told to limit pasta as it is made from flour and flour is the worst culprit lol, hence not too much bread. I am going to get out the advice sheets I was given way back and have a good old read, trouble is, as new discoveries are made about conditions the advice changes.

telmel that's what I mean though. I am absolutely fine while not eating as I am not craving for anything but as soon as I have finished my evening meal I am looking around for something sweet. I read that there is a good reason for that in the way our bodies react but can't remember it now. My worst time is from about mid afternoon onwards, but before that I can happily fast all day. I don't because I know my body needs sustenance after all those hours, but it does seem to work for me. I told the nurse because you are meant to take the meds in morning with food but she said take it when it best suits my lifestyle, so I take it before the heavy meal.

Lynibis It must be tough for you L , i feel so blessed i dont have to worry about medication, surprising as i wasnt exactly that healthy in my younger days

Its a constant battle to stay healthy now with so much junk and chemicals in our foods

Trying to find a healthy balance is very difficult

Certain types of carbs such as potatoes, wholemeal bread, wholemeal rice and wholemeal pasta are actually good for you, even when you are diabetic. The key here is to have a well balanced diet and don't overdo it on anything. 🙂

Yes, hopefully I can go back to that once I have got my levels down but at the moment don't want to get them any higher.

Not just for diabetic friendly, but when I am trying to be good, I find flavour is the make or break or me sticking to it!

An easy example is a bowl of sautéed courgette, mushroom, broccoli and tomatoes. Bland on it's own, but add garlic, ginger and chilli, and a splash of soy and it is yummy!

Yes, I must admit I love spicy food. Not too good with sloppy stuff like courgettes though! Cannot stand moussaka, those slimy aubergines make me feel a bit yuk. Sometimes you forget about doing the simple things you describe. I will give it a go.

I love the packets of ready prepared spices and herbs from Iceland in the freezer section. Ready minced garlic, ginger, chilli and at £1 a pack they are such good value, saves all the flaffing around.

Lynibis I am a big fan of the lazy garlic, ginger and chilli! As you say, can't be bothered faffing. I usually keep my veg as crunchy as possible and enjoy it more. Made a yummy curry the other day to 'use up' veg in the fridge. Threw it all in with spices, and tinned tomatoes and coconut milk. Was lovely and most likely healthy.

If you like lentils, it's another way to bulk meals out, but especially nice comfort style foods coming into autumn, without adding too many complex carbs.

Also if you are trying to limit carbs, start by removing half, makes it more achieveable for a longer period of time. If I'm having fajitas, again lots of good flavour and spices, I have one in a wrap, and one in baby gem lettuce cups! Feel satisfied with some carbs, but still feel good that I have cut some out!

Thank you beccatavender I will definitely have a look. I need to get myself organised. I am not sure whether it is better to live alone and then you develop a can't be bothered attitude to cooking or in a family where you have to cook, like it or not!

I can happily steer clear of ketchup and brown sauce, but I love seafood sauce (I make my own) and those jars of Chicken Tonight, Honey and Mustard are delicious. This was for Imnotcheap but I clicked wrong reply button!

beccatavender Yes, I do that, especially with curry. Always nice to know I have a homemade curry in the freezer, usually plenty of the bombay potatoes too. I am going to try my hand at making some onion bhajis, have bought the gram flour just got to get into cooking mode now.

I love a good salad but it takes a while to prepare. Rubbish food is so quick and convenient. I'm a sugar addict and love my toffee and various other high calorie foods but do really enjoy a salad I have to say. My salad is pretty sensible, generous portion and the dressing is just olive oil, cider vinegar and lemon juice plus seasoning. I feel like I'm getting most of my zinc, potassium and other essential minerals and vitamins from my salad and getting pretty much nothing from processed foods.

Not sure about diabetes friendly but I only eat the healthy food I actually like and always try to eat a low fat version of stuff that is unhealthy. Whilst I'm currently losing weight I don't eat things I don't enjoy as for me personally I need to enjoy the food I'm eating, otherwise it won't work. I just cut down the amount of bread, pasta, rice etc that I eat and snack on healthy food instead.
