Why Do People Post Random Topics?
Ask a Question
I've been using this site for a few months and love it and its members but the only bugbear I have is the amount of posts in Chat that has no relevance to what this site is here for..
On chat we have posts about "finding cheapest cinema tickets" these are great posts then on the other hand we will have posts about "yawning" or things I struggle to see what relevance it has to LD..?
i think chat topics give people points, so they are just posting to get points and don't even try to make it relevant
It's the 'this vs that' topics as well as questions that can easily be found out by doing a quick Google search which I find to be the most pointless of chat topics. It's all to do with point gathering. Some people are really desperate for those points.
Have you ever noticed how so many of them "make themselves scarce" when they've posted enough to get the maximum points they can get? I must have posted at least 20 times today and yesterday posted four deals, yes I knew I wouldn't get any points for the fourth, but it was one that I wanted to share. It could save many people over £100 a year. If they use NOW TV and watch sport.
davidstockport Yes, I have noticed that a lot. Some people aren't really interested in chatting; only collecting those lovely points.
And I've been looking for the owner of a cat I found. That's what chat is for... to help each other.
I am not on any social media either but happy to help with the search for the owner of the cat that has a weird resemblance to a badger
Lynibis Don't be silly Lyn - We don't get badgers where I am I've never seen a real badger, but recall from my childhood that Bill the Badger in the Rupert books walked upright this CAT doesn't - furthermore I found the cat eating CAT FOOD I'd put in my garden for a neighbours cat (while they're away). That proves it!
davidstockport sadly I see lots lying still by the roadside but come to think of it they could be a fat black and silver cat!
davidstockport I asked for advice about my 2yr old grandson being bunged up on here earlier.... problem solved !
Lynibis The only badger I've actually seen "very dead" was in a glass case and had been stuffed by some taxi driver with dermatitis (I think someone said) hopefully after it was dead. Was actually brown.
nipperjwb yes, we went a bit off subject didn't we? From a bunged up grandson to grand ol' badger, sorry David, CAT.
This subject has been debated on here a lot lately and changes are being made. Many people are fed up with trivia and this v that but there is no reason at all why the chat has to be pertinent to LD that is why the 'other' option is given.
If you haven't read the the threads and huge amount of response you might like to do so as it is very enlightening.
I personally would no longer use chat if it was solely about LD, there would not be anything to chat about if it was purely about deals, tech, or other queries.
When the new system comes in i doubt we will see so many trivia postings as they won't get the Points unless there are several responses.
I do not want the decent subjects limited. I had a lovely chat with another member on the Richard Madden thread although only the 2 of us took part. We discussed books and box sets we loved and had lots in common.
Many people do not look past the title and assume it is about a subject they won't like. I scan every one, except the trivia, and reply to many.
It's the "Chat" section. Dunno what you mean by "random", it's where people chat about stuff.
You know, this thread can be labeled random, too.
Quite correct this topic doesn't have anything to do with deals - but who cares!
There wasn't a single V in the topic title. (that's good enough for me).
I am not against chat - but it has to be a two-way street with the initial poster returning to the thread to acknowledge and reply to the people who have taken time to get involved. When you get a topic being posted and the original member doesn't come back to the thread for, let's say 8 hours, (or never) then you realise they were just gathering points and had no intention of any meaningful interaction. I've had some great chat with members that have not been freebie/bargain related and that has been really enjoyable. I would be disappointed if they were to be stopped. There are always the LD pages to ask for the best deals but I see no problem with asking here - some people are not so active on the daily fb pages. The topics I won't entertain are the banal 6 word questions and the 'vs' trick. The ones that the new rules affect will shout the loudest. Yahya you may just want to drop in back here and let people know you have read some of the responses.........
I agree with everything you say... if people are not interested in the answers to the questions they ask. Why do they post them?
I think many of us know who the worst culprits are so don't bother trying to CHAT with them.
davidstockport just out of interest i went back over the topics of 2 younger members and they had not not replied to one single thread they started. Ok, their choice but it is quite discourteous. Then again why do they care.........got their 20 points whether they reply or not. What I don't understand is that they don't appear to comment elsewhere so if they replied to their respondees they could get another 100 points.........strange.
Lynibis Please don't tell them they'll get points for replying - their opening topics are inane enough.
Although if you are referring to who you think you are they couldn't get many points for replying to other members, there aren't enough to reply to.
I think its good to have chats that are not related to latest deals. As it would get really boring if the whole chat was filled with deals, tech etc. I've come across great chats and learnt a lot from the chats with topics that have nothing to do with latest deals.
"on the other hand we will have posts about "yawning" or things "
Yawning has a lot of relevance to this "Chat Feature" it is what many of us do when we see V or VS sandwiched between two words.
To be fair there haven't been so many in the last couple of days......they must be busy picking their dummies back up. (unkind but irresistible)
angemski I had to smile at the word "irresistible" it reminded me of something funny that happened a few days ago.
angemski I checked the opening page a short time ago there was only one (too many) on it. A short time ago it looked like a sporting fixtures list. I half expected someone to add the scores later on.
davidstockport I think the days of vs are numbered, thank goodness. Fingers crossed for some meatier chats.
what does it matter what people talk about as long as it gets people talking instead of sat at home bored ... I don't go on any other sites only Facebook n that's for the games. i like a good chat about any subject from serious subjects like the young isis bride returning to Britain to a chat to having a hole in your wellington ... the chat on here isn't just about the site if it is then being a active member for a year i lost the plot from the day i joined
Damn didn't expect quite a response.. Oh well one for Admin to decide. I get the whole points thing but I believe it needs to be more like "bigger the discount found and shared, the bigger the points on offer". This is one way to really get our thinking caps of driving home those deals for everyone and grow LD to the next level
Always suggested to the team that points should be given for likes on a post/deal rather than upfront. That way you dont get Amazon voucher printing tourists
BW07 I doubt that would work or be too fair - one person could be posting a deal that was a high value item with a substantial saving for someone actually looking for that item and get very few likes, Whereas someone else posting a cheap trashy item might get numerous likes. Got to remember any person, member or not, can access the deals but it is only signed in people who can like a deal.
I have one high value item deal where the deal price is almost half price that I don't expect to get many likes, but anyone actually looking for the lowest price on a Taylor guitar would be delighted with. My few like deal is more likely to enhance this site than a cheap trashy deal that gets dozens of likes.
There can never be a simple way to decide how deals should be rewarded but I hope you can see why counting the likes would not be likely to work. The "points gatherers" would soon find which were the best deals to avoid posting as it is some already post deals that aren't worth considering.
Your original post was about chat. What you suggest here would be unworkable and take far too much monitoring. Everyone takes time and trouble posting their deals and you would begin to not bother because someone else could be posting a better one.
Also, people get 5 points for liking 5 deals, another thing easy to abuse just for the points.
It remains for all of us to be vigilant and keep reporting abuses and duplicate deals. This includes posting 3 or 4 deals of the same item but in different varieties or flavours, that was confirmed by Tom in a previous thread.
Am I the only one that really doesn't care about the points side of the site? Yes it is a lovely bonus but isn't what I am here for. I joined for the deals as it saves trawling through Amazon etc myself (and I will only buy if it something I really want, no matter how cheap it is). The chat section keeps me sane (terms and conditions apply) as I work alone and the blinds in my office are bored of me talking to them now, so to have a bit of human interaction is great. Whilst a lot of the threads are inane and only put up to gain points, a lot are very interesting, especially ones where black and white cats have lost their way
I agree to an extent but the site is a two way street and if you use AND post you cannot avoid gaining points. Posting just 3 deals per day, 10 comps per week and 5 comments per week earns 3000 points per week. As it is members that keep the site going the founders obviously feel we deserve some sort of reward. After all you wouldn't work extra time for your boss because you liked the job and not take the overtime payment.
I would just point out that I think the reason there has been such an outcry about inane chat subjects is 1. Because most fair minded people don't like to see inane subjects posted for mere points gathering and 2. It pushes down the interesting subjects before some people even get a chance to see them. I only go back 3 pages maximum otherwise it is too time consuming.
Lynibis I would still post regardless of points though, the gain for me is getting cheaper items occasionally and staving off boredom. I post on other media platforms, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc and don't get anything in return so to me it is no different. I'm not saying I am not grateful for getting the points, but it isn't the b all and end all for me at all. As for the working extra time analogy, I quite often do that anyway and don't expect overtime payments and know plenty of others that do the same, there has to be give and take in any part of life.
Ultimately every single one of us wants something different from this site and I think the founder members are doing an amazing job in keeping everyone as happy as they can, they are never going to please everyone. I certainly wouldn't stop posting because I had gone over my quota limit to gain points each day
elise me neither, I often post lots more than 3 deals but I have never once bought a deal, nor do I use it, I post purely for others. I also post more than 3 comps per day but I enter all website ones that interest me. I also comment far more than 5 comments a day, it is only 9.30 and have already done at least 10!
As for the analogy, yes we have all done it but if asked to do an extra hour or two for extra pay you wouldn't refuse the money but do the time unless already well off. And that is what we are doing here: Posting stuff at the request of the founders.
