Why You Should Rethink Adding Yeast to Mashed Potatoes

In the News

So TickTok are at it again, giving more useless and in this case dangerous advice

They are telling people to add yeast to their mashed potato to make it fluffier

All good and well until you realise that the milk and potato will not get hot enough to kill the active yeast cultures, and digested active yeast can cause gastrointestinal problems

I have seen some newspapers praising this tip , it just goes to show even they do not do enough research on their stories

I would stick to using yeast to make bread to avoid a dodgy stomach

There are many people who, shall we say, are of lesser intelligence, and it frightens me to think they may do these things believing everything they see on social media is correct. Off subject, but I have now stopped using tiktok as I realised it was adding nothing to my life. Why people chase likes and views is beyond my ken.

Mind you lots of bread still has active yeast. Low grade parbaked bread products from convenience stores, petrol forecourt shops and small supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi have a lot of remaining active yeast in them which is why such bread goes off so quickly as the active yeast is still operating within the bread. I wouldn't of thought the health implications were much different, they put huge levels of yeast into parbaked bread because the freezing process does kill a percentage of it before its then continued cooking in the shop however later some of the inactive yeast becomes active again. Ultimately some people are yeast sensitive and some people aren't so much. It maybe one of those issues that if your stomach acid isn't acidic enough it won't destroy the yeast and that can lead to problems. The amount of symptoms you can have if you are yeast intolerant/sensitive are huge its almost a complete list of all the classic symptoms of illnesses. You have winning combinations like a high level of flatulence and diarrhoea with it.

BonzoBanana Theres so much to think about concerning foods B, no wonder there are so many incidents involving food poisoning etc

telmel I think the issue with many of these foods is you don't get full on food poisoning but you just feel unwell, less than your best. Maybe fatigue, lack of concentration etc because inside your body is having to deal with a yeast invasion so your body is fighting too much yeast inside it. Fungus is one of the hardest things to remove. When you look at the history of life, animals evolved from multi-cellular fungi, we are like sophisticated mushrooms that work with bacteria and viruses to create a sort of symbiosis. However as we are basically mushrooms ourselves even highly evolved mushrooms it can sometimes be difficult to remove other fungi from our bodies i.e. yeasts (single cellular fungi) that we don't need. However I feel they just generally make you feel unwell and less than your best rather than be life threatening for the sort of yeasts we consume. I really love bread though but one of the worst possible foods when you think about it. However nutritional yeast is great for you but then its dead and you are just breaking down the dead yeast in your body with all its fantastic nutrition. Dead yeast is the best way of eating yeast.

BonzoBanana You are correct about mushrooms , we are closer to them than people realise

I found this on google

As lower eukaryotes, fungi are more closely related to humans than are other microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. With what little fungal sequence is available, homologues for 30 percent of human proteins can be found, almost twice what is known from S

telmel yes I think the multi-cellular life we evolved from was early fungi. They started to develop muscles for movement and eyes from light sensitive skin and hearing from feeling the movement of air across their surfaces. It's all pretty weird when you think about it. The more you learn the stranger and amazing the world seems. When you touch the surface of some mushrooms it's eerily similar to human skin. An old mushroom's skin can wrinkle and look pitted like human skin.
