Woman in Wales Receives a £16,000 Water Bill

In the News

I know everything is going up in the UK at the moment including utilities, but this water bill was way beyond any increases

It turns out she had a leak in the pipework her side of the meter which she is responsible for , and only realised after receiving the bill and then checking to see the meter spinning out of control

It is always advisable to check the meter every week at least to make sure you don't have a leak and end up with a bill like this

What is annoying though is water companies have thousands of leaks daily, some they never repair , which must cost them astronomical amounts in lost water , but woe betide if you have one , they will want it paying for , as it shows happened here

It might be worth checking if your home insurance covers leaks after reading this

I think my water bill is about £8-10 a month, so small its not on my radar so to speak. I don't think I have a meter for water, maybe I've never looked at it. However outside there is a device connected to the pipe. I actually thought this would be electronic but there is no power to it so unless it has a very long life battery maybe it is a mechanical meter and I have to pull off a cap to see the reading.

OmG that's so sad and awful. In December we had a gas leak in the house and it resulted in a hefty bill too 😣 they weren't happy with our explanation but luckily the emergency gas folk helped us by providing evidence...they then reduced the bill by half. My heart goes out to this lady.
