Mummy is just the longer version of mum in British English and somehow that's offensive now because of Egyptian mummies.
That said, I do prefer the U.S. spelling of the word as the pronunciation sounds like mom literally, and when saying mother it's with an o than a u ("muther" wouldn't sound right unless it was a German word or something).

Getting sick to my back teeth of all this woke, snowflake, banning of this word, that word. If no offence is intended them don't take offence!
Lynibis You are right. I think these days people are just trying to make themselves 'famous' for five minutes by declaring that they don't like a particular word and expecting everyone else to be sympathetic. As you say, if you don't like the word then don't use it - the rest of us will carry on using it, and probably more so now, just to be awkward.
I get totally fed up with other people trying to tell us what to say and what to think!
tumblespots I am aware that the other day I did a topic on an ageist remark made to me, but in my defence the lady was definitely being unkind with a bad attitude. Had she said it with humour and a laugh i would have laughed along with her.
But, I do object to language moderation to please those who look for a reason to take offence.
One thing I will not go along with is the current prefix for sexual identity words. If someone presents to me as a male I will use he/him/his and if they present as female I will say her/she. It is not my problem to alter my speech for their identity but for them to tolerate that most folk will speak as they find. However, if a male clearly presents as a woman (clothing, make up etc) then I will happily use she or her and vice versa. But don't expect to make me feel uncomfortable for inadvertently using the wrong prefix when I mean no offence.
If you don't like it, change it in your family? Lots of people use Mam in the UK or pick something completely different!
They are the same word but two different meanings, one means mummified and the other means mother, we use the same word or even spellings for multiple things.
Doctors don't even call you the mother now, I've heard - you are the birth parent or the pregnant person.
Plenty of people refer to children as kids and their grandmother as a nanny, neither are implying they are a goat.
I understand if something offends someone then it should be changed, but anything can be offensive, it is how the person means it and the other receives it. I also understand that this is happening a lot recently and I personally feel there are lots of other things more important to focus on. Not long ago we couldn't refer to an animal saying you feel like a sloth today or a pig etc. Not because it is horrible but because it can be offensive to the animal.
SilverSurfer I believe the original meaning was to be aware of what is happening around you, google defines it as being aware or well informed in a political or cultural sense , and Wikipedia "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination" but there is probably a more sinister meaning ?
SilverSurfer Maybe it started off as being alert to these things, which isn't a bad concept, but it has gone too far in my opinion , changing history , tearing down statues , altering street names , changing every day words because they are deemed offensive etc etc , people need to get a life
Trying to erase history doesn't work, you need a reminder of the things that were so wrong many hundreds of years ago so it doesn't happen again
That is why Auschwitz is still there to remind everyone of the holocaust , what would be the point in tearing it down to hide the wrongs of the past
I think we have far bigger problems to deal with, especially with people like Andrew Tate gaining so many followers. If someone says a word without meaning harm or insult surely it is then just a word.
An idle woke museum staff who doesn't know the word mummy has been around for more than a century. Poor thing - both the mummy and the staff.
I love the idea or mummy to mommy especially with a Yorkshire accent. Maybe just it's my family accent, I can't imagine hearing the word mommy in Yorkshire 
Has anyone (including the OP) actually read the article? It isn't the use of the word "mummy" to refer to a female parent that is objected to, but the use of the word "mummy" being used to refer to a mummified body.
There was little need to read beyond the headline: Mummified ancient Egyptian remains should no longer be called 'mummies' as the term is outdated and 'dehumanising', a leading museum has said. To understand that the subject under discussion bears no resemblance to actual fact.
Second time (at least) in the past week that INCORRECT information - has been discussed as if what was said by OP is correct. I'd suggest people read articles - especially if what is posted seems to contradict common sense. (it isn't April the first every day of the year).
