Worries for Future Communication

Ask a Question

Do people not realise that if they keep on adding things to the list to be offended by we are storing up trouble for ourselves. We won't be able to make eye contact with people without causing offence, already before we start a conversation with people we don't know we're opening dialogue using disclaimers, 'I hope you don't mind/think.....', 'Sorry to ask you but.....', 'Would you mind.....'. You could argue that it's politeness but it's more than that, we're having to be so much more selective with our words. Can everyone not see how much we've lost interaction-wise because of Technology so why are we actively heading for a more self isolating world where we won't open our mouths for the fear of upsetting someone?

Unfortunately, Ann1984, that's just the way it's going to be from now on by the looks of it.

Everyone haa been pandering to anyone who has a 'cause' and it's been a lot worse since the pandemic. Some people just get offended by absolutely everything. Whether it's just attention seeking, I don't know.

I'm not saying that there's not worthy causes out there.

I've been called sexist and racist recently just because I have a different opinion from 'activists'. They just start name calling because I don't agree with them and I'm not being sexist or racist at all ๐Ÿ˜

TheChimp freedom of speech has gone which is sad we should be allowed our opinion no matter who it upsets.

I agree... Ann1984 ... a good topic .... I've found that even on here I read and re-read my responses ... that's partly because it's difficult sometimes when folk don't know me and my humour etc etc .... but I definitely do the 'disclaimer' thing in speech and text ..... I hate upsetting anyone but I do like a decent discussion and will readily change my mind if someone explains a better option.

I have inadvertently offended people with innocent comments taken the wrong way. When in doubt I often ask my teenage daughter but sometimes she can't see the problem either

Very well put Ann and there is nothing more I can add as you have it in a nutshell. Makes a mockery of free speech too.

And talking of impolite, how bad is it when someone you are conversing with is texting with eyes glued to phone and just mumbling platitudes to make you feel as if they are listening. Surely the person whose company you are in should come first. So rude.

Lynibis itโ€™s just worrying that it has come to this I only created this topic based on a news article that Doctorsโ€™s are advised not to tell patients they over weight with a bmi over 25 due to self esteem. But surely they only doing there job for their health sake. If someone is suffering in silence do you not ask if they ok anymore not to give advice. Am a tough cookie and no words will hurt me and donโ€™t care if people donโ€™t like me but the social interaction has gone

Ann1984 that's unbelievable, self esteem is more important than dying of obesity related disease? Although I am not hugely overweight I have never minded anyone, medical or otherwise, referring to my weight politely, I would only object to make calling. The flip side of that could be 'Oh well, the doctor doesn't think I am overweight so I can carry on as I am and it is not my fault if I get ill, but hey my self esteem is fine'.
