Named after the Reverend Elijah Craig who is credited as the first person to use charred barrels to age whiskey earning his place in history as the 'Father of Bourbon.' The charred barrel transformed the clear liquid inside into an intense amber whiskey made rich with the flavors of the wood which we now recognize as Bourbon and the use of charred oak barrels has been written into Bourbon law.

Elijah Craig Small Batch is distilled, aged and bottled in Kentucky from a traditional Bourbon mashbill of 78% Corn, 10% Rye and 12% Malted Barley and then aged for 8 to 12 years in #3 char new American oak barrels. The result of each Small Batch is a signature warm spice and subtle smoke flavor.

When it was first brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig long before the term “small batch” existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that gives Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body and rich flavour.

Bourbon whiskey is intrinsically linked to the history of the USA and its pioneers’ thirst for discovery.

In the late 1700s, the westward expansion of America was encouraged by giving acres of land to settlers who ventured west and planted a crop of corn under the 'Corn Patch and Cabin Rights' law. Corn grew abundantly in this fertile land, and the excess that couldn't be eaten or traded was distilled into whiskey.

It was soon discovered that the best quality whiskey came from Kentucky; due to its pure limestone-filtered water and its seasonal climate of warm summers and cold winters. This whiskey came to be known as Bourbon and was prized for its unique, smooth character and rich flavour.

Bourbon Whiskey is written into US law as a 'Distinctive Product of the United States'. To be called a Bourbon, a whiskey must be made in the USA, from a minimum of 51% corn, aged in new, charred oak barrels and bottled without adding anything except water.
