With the cost of living rising sharply, many of us are putting off home renovations.

But one mum has shown how to totally transform the hallway of your home on a budget.

Tanya O’kane, 47, a mum of three and visual merchandiser from Derry City, wanted to bring the on-trend slatted wall to her home, but didn’t want to pay hundreds for a builder to install it.

Instead, she stocked up on £46 of supplies from B&Q and did it herself.

Tanya told money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK: "I came up with the idea of doing a slatted wall in my hallway, as I've seen a few businesses doing it and I liked it.

“It was super easy to do by myself as I love DIY and would give anything a go.

"I used softwood planed smooth timber strips from B&Q and No More Nails glue.

“I glued the first slat on, left it to dry til the next day and then was able to glue the rest using the narrow end of the wood as spacers.

"I cut the strips around the mirror to have the mirror sunk in as I only wanted it overlapping the mirror.

"I also used black paint below the slats to make the wood pop.

“My mitre saw and jigsaw made it easier.

"I had all the materials like the paint and saws at home so I only spent £46 on wood and glue, and saved a fortune doing it myself.

"I bought the wood at B&Q at £18 per pack of eight and I bought two packs for the project.

"I spent £46 on the project as I had everything else already.

“With everything getting pricey at the moment including wood, I would rather try and do what I want myself.

“We are going on holiday this year for the first time in three years, so I would rather save and keep my money for that.

"I have an Instagram page @59bytheriver that I started up when I was off work with breast cancer.

“It gave me something to keep myself occupied.

"I love interiors so it gave me a little boost to keep going and busy.

"I definitely saved a lot doing this by myself as when you get someone out to do it, it would cost a few hundred pounds!”

Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “Who knew that spending just £46 could make such a difference to a space?

“The slatted wall and black paint now really make the area pop, and Tanya has proven you really don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds to transform a space in your home!"
