Jonathan Ray, The Spectator’s drinks editor, says: ‘Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy Liqueur is a thing of great beauty. It is one of my all-time favourite liqueurs, one that never fails to bring a smile to my lips and a spring to my step. whenever I serve it to guests after dinner – or before, come to that, as a Kentish Kir – I delight in seeing the grin slowly steel upon said guests’ chops as they take in its gloriously sweet, yet tart, cherry flavours, hints of almonds and marzipan, and warming oomph of alcohol.
If you don’t know it, you should. It celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, having first been produced in Faversham, Kent, in 1774. Made from English grain spirit and Kentish cherries, it was a favourite of Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens, who mentions it in The Pickwick Papers. Still made it Kent and now owned by mighty Shepherd Neame, it also boasts a Royal Warrant from the King from when he was Prince of Wales.
The 10th Duke of Northumberland used Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy Liqueur as a stirrup cup when riding to hounds with the Percy Hunt, mixing it half and half with whisky and calling it a Percy Special. The Neame family themselves favour a shot in mugs of steaming hot chocolate or poured liberally over ice cream.
I like it neat or on the rocks as a restorative, tongue-tingling digestif or as part of the aforementioned Kentish Kir, whereby a hearty slug is added to a flute of fine Kentish fizz to give added vim and vigour.
We have six 50cl bottles of this glorious liqueur to give away in celebration of its remarkable anniversary. All you have to do is enter – and keep your fingers crossed. I really don’t know of a finer cherry brandy and wish everyone the best of luck!’
