There’s no beating around the bush, the Finns know how to drink. And they like rye bread. So perhaps it was only a matter of time before we got a 100% malted Finnish rye whisky out of the country. However, we had no idea that it would be of the calibre that Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky is; just as smooth and clean as what comes out of Kentucky.
Ideated by a group of friends after possibly the most stereotypically Finnish brainstorming session imaginable – it took place in a sauna, after all – the distillery has gone from strength to strength, kicking ass, taking names and creating some phenomenal rye whisky along the way. Differing from column still rye distillation in the US, Kyrö whisky is distilled in pot stills and non-chill filtered, before being aged in ex-bourbon and New American oak casks. Choosing the best from both American and Scottish whisky traditions, the Kyrö whisky has the complexity of Scotch Single Malt and the accessibility of American rye. Rye from Finland is special because it's very sweet by nature, and they only use malted rye.
Now, nearly a decade on from that fateful, steamy powwow, Kyrö's full range has finally come to maturity. By innovating in a way that only a startup could, they’ve created four unique whiskies that are as interesting as they are a pleasure to drink. Rye from Finland is special because it's very sweet by nature, and they only use malted rye to create a whisky that's one of a kind and a new category of whisky making, helping to built a global community. What's for certain is that they're brutally Finnish: strong and independent. Bottoms up!
