This is not stainless steel. I have two of these and they are alloy and you can literally pick one up with one finger with ease. As for putting a microwave on top, I personally wouldn't due to the weight, furthermore, it would have to be a small microwave. I measured up my 800w microwave and it doesn't fit. Am I disappointed in my purchase, yes, as it is false advertising. However, I have two and use one for a shoe rack and have one in the shed holding my powertool cases. These would however make a decent speaker holder. As for the hooks, well, I chucked them into the bin as they are flimsy.
