Discounts for disabled people
People who are severely mentally impaired aren’t included when working out Council Tax.
You also aren’t included if you’re a live-in carer looking after someone who isn’t your partner, spouse, or child under 18.
Apply for a Council Tax discount.
Disabled Band Reduction Scheme
You may be eligible for the scheme if you live in a larger property than you would need if you or another occupant weren’t disabled.
You’ll have to show that you’ve either:
an extra bathroom, kitchen or other room that you need for the disabled person
extra space inside the property for using a wheelchair
The property must be the main home of at least 1 disabled person. This can be an adult or a child - it doesn’t have to be the person responsible for paying the Council Tax.
This is an excellent post . 1 thing that really annoys me is on a weekly basis its highlighted about benefit fraud which is less than 1% of the entire welfare budget .Unfortunately though the amount that goes unclaimed as people simply don't know about the benefit they are entitled to isn't been told to them . Well done on sharing this and making people aware of it .
I applied for this for my M in L, you do it through your Local council website, form was long but easy. Notification came through within 3 weeks - nothing to pay for 20/21 and they were refunding 6 weeks from 19/20
The SMI discount doesn't apply if there is more than one other chargeable adult in the property. The SMI discount is awarded based on entitlement to disability benefits and certification from the GP.
If a person has moved to a care home they are also exempt from council tax calculation.
If an adult child lives in the property and cares for the disabled person both can be disregarded for council tax.
Any adult child who child benefit is still paid for is disregarded.
Full time students (studying at least 12 hours a week if the course started before they turned 20, or studying 21 hours a week if they started the course when they started the course) evidence from the education provider is required.
If you have a low income you may qualify for your council's local council tax reduction scheme - contact your council tax section to find out more or check their website, a lot of councils use online applications now so always worth checking their website
