The buzz began when Kerry Luisa Ogman, a keen shopper, took to Facebook's Extreme Couponing and Bargains group to share her discovery. She shared a photo of Tesco's Brown Onions Minimum 3 Pack 385G, priced at just £1.10. In her post, Kerry highlighted the potential savings by comparing it to buying three loose onions of similar size, which cost her only 41p.

"Just a thought, money is tight for a lot of us right now," Kerry wrote. "I just priced up a nest of 3 brown onions at Tesco for £1.10, I bought 3 loose, roughly the same size, and they weighed in at 41p... big saving on 1 item."

Kerry's post garnered substantial engagement, receiving 534 likes and attracting 123 comments from fellow shoppers who were quick to share their own money-saving strategies.

Margaret Spratt commented, "I notice that the other week.xx," indicating that she had also noticed the cost difference and potentially capitalised on the deal.

Leonie Parkinson chimed in, saying, "I've just started buying loose on any products I can and have saved a little bit on my shopping.. xx," further emphasising the trend of frugal shopping among consumers.

In response to the buzz around buying loose onions, Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "It works out 62% cheaper to buy the onions loose than in a pack. And, you save on plastic as well as fiddling around with those annoying bags. What I can't understand is why Tesco charges so much more. The plastic bag probably costs them less than 1p to make. I imagine the same trick works on mushrooms and other vegetables too."
