I don't quite get the point of these. They are fire os based and more locked down to Amazon's eco system. Surely much better to get a standard android tablet and have full freedom to use it as you like and have a much wider choice of apps. The spec isn't that great. Seems a pointless purchase to me. They are gradually locking down fire os more and more too so it can only get worse in the future.
BonzoBanana I have a Fire HD 8 Tablet and it's great as a budget tablet, but a 7? Pass.
I actually don't mind the Fire launcher, just unfortunate I can't remove the "For You" and "Library" tabs, because it's a decent simple launcher.
My Fire tablet only has two Amazon apps because the system won't allow to remove it at all (Appstore + Help) otherwise it's cleaned up.
PhilipMarc I must admit I don't have a fire tablet myself although did have one in the past which I won of the hotukdeals site. I just keep reading that fire os is getting more locked down over time and moving away from android compatibility but I don't know the current situation.
BonzoBanana When the Fire OS makes it impossible to use it as an Android device I see no reason to buy one even as cheap as it may be.
I did read Amazon is looking to move away from the Android OS so those who enjoy the Fire TV sticks may want to buy them now.
PhilipMarc I'm pretty sure it is there intent to lock down their devices more and that sideloading android apps is an annoyance to them. There were reports of people updating their fire os devices back along and their sideloaded android apps being deleted after the update. However not having a fire os device I don't know if they have backtracked from doing that or are still gradually locking down their devices.
