The sweet potato is a native American plant and, despite it's name, is not related to the potato. It was brought back to Spain by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and introduced to African lands by the Portuguese. They are cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions and need abundant sunshine to grow.
As the name suggests, sweet potatoes have a sweet flavour and are moist when cooked. Incredibly versatile, they can be steamed, baked, boiled, microwaved, roasted or fried.
