  • Aldi named the UK's cheapest supermarket in January, saving shoppers £41.20 compared to the priciest store.
  • Consumer group Which? compared prices of 72 items across eight major supermarkets.
  • Lidl closely follows Aldi, with Waitrose ranking as the most expensive.
  • Tips for saving on grocery shopping include making a list, choosing store brands, and looking for reduced items.

Which? compared the prices of 72 products from eight different supermarkets to see which offered the best value.

They revealed the precise cost of a weekly grocery haul at eight leading supermarkets was scrutinized, showing a potential saving of over £40 for savvy shoppers. A detailed comparison by consumer champion Which? in January spotlighted the price tags on 72 essential products across these retail giants.

Aldi emerged as the budget-friendly victor, with an average trolley cost of £129.24, narrowly edging out Lidl by a mere £3.13. On the flip side, Waitrose's basket came in at a hefty £170.44, marking a 32% increase over Aldi's pricing and highlighting a £41.20 gap between the highest and lowest costs.

Olivia Marshall at The Sun reported on these findings, offering a comprehensive ranking from the most to the least affordable supermarkets, as follows:

  1. Aldi – £129.24
  2. Lidl – £132.37
  3. Asda – £145.75
  4. Tesco – £149.11
  5. Sainsbury’s – £153.50
  6. Morrisons – £156.05
  7. Ocado – £157.15
  8. Waitrose – £170.44

This analysis not only uncovers where consumers can stretch their pounds further but also underscores the significant price disparities among the UK's supermarket giants. Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, commented on the persisting dominance of Aldi as the go-to choice for budget-conscious families, attributing it to the ongoing struggle with rising food prices. Clark's insights suggest a 24% saving potential by opting for discount supermarkets over their higher-priced counterparts.

Additionally, practical advice for reducing grocery bills includes planning purchases with a shopping list, opting for supermarket own-brand items, and capitalizing on "wonky" veg offers and unit price comparisons for the best deals. Not to overlook, supermarket loyalty schemes like Sainsbury's Nectar and Tesco's Clubcard can offer further savings through points accumulation.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "This latest analysis from Which? shines a light on the importance of choosing where to shop wisely. With the possibility of saving over £40 on a weekly shop, it's a no-brainer for those looking to tighten their belts. Beyond just switching supermarkets, simple strategies like buying store brands, checking unit prices, and taking advantage of loyalty schemes can make a significant difference in your spending without compromising on quality or quantity."

72 is not a realistic number of items to represent how all people shop and surely a shop with a much more limited range of goods should be penalised in such a comparison as it means an extra shopping trip, extra time and extra fuel. Just seems a stupid comparison to me. Also which Tesco are they comparing, as Express is a convenience store and Extra is the largest supermarket and Metro is in the middle of those two and doesn't carry the full range of value options. It would seem fair to compare Extra stores as those are actually supermarkets and make up the majority of their supermarket stores but I don't know what type of Tesco store is being compared here.

As I've said before these rankings don't work for me at all. I actually can only buy a more limited selection of goods at Lidl and Aldi and really just use them for occasional top up shops.

So no Lidl and Aldi definitely aren't cheaper for me. Also no Iceland or Farmfoods in the list? Those shops also have limited ranges like Aldi and Lidl but are not in the comparison?
