Tesco Pioneers Period Pants VAT Savings
Bargain alert! Tesco is now offering you a 20% price drop on their F&F period underwear, making them more wallet-friendly. Yep, you heard that right, they're covering the cost of the VAT on their entire range of period pants.
Aoife Morgan at Retail Gazette reported that this means the price of a three-pack of these pants drops from ᆪ18 to a friendlier ᆪ14.40. And if you're just looking for a single pair? Now down to ᆪ6 from ᆪ7.50.
This savvy move by Tesco is all part of the Say Pants To The Tax campaign, which they've teamed up with alongside M&S and Wuka. Their aim? Get the government to see sense and reclassify period pants as a period product, exempting them from VAT, instead of just tagging them as regular 'garments'. It's worth noting that Tesco has been a front runner in making period products more affordable. They first covered VAT costs for almost 100 of their own label and other branded sanitary products in 2017, before the government caught up and axed the VAT in 2021.
In the words of Tesco Group communications director Christine Heffernan, "We were the first retailer to cover the cost of VAT on period products in 2017 and we’re proud to be helping customers again by covering the cost of VAT on period pants now, to make them that bit more affordable”.
To wrap up, here's a take from Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk, “It's clear that industry leaders like Tesco are taking steps towards greater affordability in essential products. Consumers stand to benefit immensely.”
