Mum Of 5 Turns ‘Miserable’ Yard Into Ibiza Paradise With £1.49 Bargains
- Sharon, 54, wanted to change her ‘dark and miserable’ yard
- She picked up bargains from Home Bargains, eBay and charity shops
- Bargain buys include £1.49 fence lights and free furniture
Sometimes when we are faced with an uninspiring back garden, it can be tough to work out what to do with it. However, one savvy mum was inspired by a craft shop buy and created a relaxing Ibiza-style haven as a result.
Sharon Jones, 54 from Wrexham with five children aged 32, 30, 28, 22 and 16, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘Our garden is very narrow and opens onto fields with cows that come to our fence.
‘Even though it was block paved, it always looked dark and miserable - even when we put the effort into weeding and jet washing it.
‘Overall, the space was never ever inviting and I wanted that to change.
‘The theme for the garden came together after I bought a handmade mosaic for £20 at a craft fayre. I wanted to place it out in the garden but I also wanted the vibe to match.
‘My husband and I also wanted to create a low maintenance space as we work full time so don’t have time to spend hours gardening.
‘When my husband picked up some gravel grids at a car boot for our front drive, this inspired us to use gravel in our backyard.
‘We were browsing in Wickes and saw the bags were only £5.50 each so the idea for an Ibiza-style garden began to form more in my head. I picked up 20 bags in total which cost £110.
‘I chose grass type plants from Amazon which didn’t cost more than £50 and I found a Yucca reduced to £10 in Morrisons.
‘We were given the blue ceramic pots by a friend when she moved house, and I was gifted the palm for my birthday.
‘I visited car boots and charity shops to pick up other pots. I got 5 in total and they cost £1 each.
‘To make them match the first pots, we painted them blue using some navy Frenchic paint left over from an inside DIY job we had completed.
‘The 3x3 gazebo was from eBay and cost about £160. I have seen similar ones on Amazon for at least £70 more so we made a good saving there. It’s wall mounted so my husband built the legs up.
‘We wanted some nice places to sit so we got some chairs and a table from Aldi as they were reduced to £49. Similarly, the lounger was reduced to £59 at Home Bargains. While we were there we picked up a lamp and rug for £14 and £39 respectively.
‘There is also a little fish pond, which didn’t cost anything - my parents gave it to me about four years ago. It had been sitting around looking empty and sad, so I painted it and replaced the bulb. It looks stunning now and it’s home to four fish.
‘My husband made the small black slat fence with recycled roofing battens and some old trellis from the side of our house.
‘The love seat was given to us and we got the small parasol from a car boot. I tried to dye it as it’s faded but it didn’t take, so I will use fabric paint on it.
‘The wall lights came from Home Bargains for £10 each, and I got 2. I also got 8 fence lights for £1.49 each. I picked up a cushion and throw from a charity shop for £5 total.
‘The baskets were second hand and cost me £5 for 3. We also got fake grass put in which was donated by a friend.
‘We wanted a low maintenance Ibiza vibe area where we can sit and just watch the stars at night.
‘After a month of hard work, our project is complete and it’s so tranquil. This style isn't to everyone's taste but it suits us. Plus, we can’t plant along the fence as the cows can reach in and eat it!’

‘She has also made some fantastic savings along the way by shopping in bargain-friendly places.’
