Sainsbury's Beats Aldi? Supermarket Cheaper For These Select Items
Sainsbury's is giving Lidl and Aldi a run for their money. While Lidl holds the crown for being the most affordable option, Sainsbury’s is now firmly in second place, edging out Aldi. Sarah Bull at The Sun reported that Sainsbury's has been cheaper than Aldi for these essential shopping items for a month now. This is significant as Aldi and Lidl have traditionally been seen as the market leaders for value.
In response to the cost of living crisis, Sainsbury's has revamped its value product range under the new Stamford Street Co label, which offers around 200 products. This includes 20 new high-volume products with very competitive prices like the Beef & Onion pie (£2.90) and Cheese Tortelloni (£1.21). The goal is clear: CEO Simon Roberts envisions Sainsbury's prices to rival Aldi's.
Lidl remains the most cost-effective with a basket total of £11.68. Sainsbury's comes in second at £12.17, barely beating Aldi's £12.18. Tesco and Asda follow at £12.47 and £12.81 respectively, with Morrisons trailing at £12.85.
Sainsbury's focus on affordability comes amidst growing concern over the cost of living. Rhian Bartlett, food commercial director at Sainsbury’s, mentioned the importance of affordable and delicious food for their customers. Aldi, however, argues that the comparisons might not be entirely fair, noting differences in product quality and size.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk, observed, "This competition among supermarkets is heating up, with Sainsbury's bold strategy pushing them up the ranks. It's a win for consumers searching for value."

Check Out These Money Saving TipsSainsburys offers a much wider range of goods so its likely you can do a full shop in one visit. I can't do a full shop at Lidl and Aldi as they have a more limited range. I tend to only do walking shops at Aldi as I can carry all the goods I want from them but for others who drive there that is an additional journey assuming they can't get everything there to another supermarket which adds additional costs in fuel, time and wear and tear on the vehicle.
So I feel that if Sainsburys are that close to them in value in real terms they are a lot better. Also Sainsbury's have nectar points I don't think there is any scheme at Aldi like that.
Also both Lidl and Aldi have a much larger amount of imported goods especially processed food and of course the profits go back to Germany so its a hugely more damaging to our economy. I think every household in the UK is paying over £4k in interest payments for government debt per year this has mainly built up due to payments to the EU and a trading deficit mainly with Europe. So this so called good value is actually reducing services available to you like the NHS, police etc and adding more to the debt pile that you pay. So these savings actually make you poorer in real terms.
It's only really with short term thinking Lidl and Aldi appear as good value. Most people in the UK have gotten financially much worse off in recent years.
BonzoBanana I am convince that Aldi and Sainsbury's uses the same cheap factory to buy their goods from. Shame on Sainsbury's for going down to Aldi level.
jam45 Aldi and Lidl's typically have a higher percentage of imported processed food which helps improve their margin but much of it is still UK sourced especially for common popular UK items and I think a lot of supermarkets are buying from the same factories that create generic food. I did recently buy some Sainsbury's tinned tuna and it was very good quality yet the Aldi Essential version is really just Tuna mush flakes and very low quality. I'm sure I had some Essential Tuna from Aldi a while ago that was much better quality though. I think they are juggling suppliers and change them if they find a cheaper supplier.
It does sound like Sainsbury's are the best supermarket at the moment as they have a full range of goods plus are very competitive for a large selection of food items. Unfortunately I have to go to a different town for a Sainsburys as there isn't one in Yeovil. There is a small one in nearby Sherborne but really you have to go to Street or Weymouth to get a full size Sainsburys which adds petrol costs and time so unfortunately Sainsburys isn't an option for me.
