Sainsbury’s Tops as Most Expensive Supermarket, Finds Which?
Deal Hunters, if you're looking to save on your groceries, you might want to think twice before heading to Sainsbury’s for your big shop. Georgia Wright at Retail Gazette reported that Which has crowned Sainsbury's as the most expensive supermarket for those big shops if you’re not tapping into loyalty card deals.
Surprisingly, this time around, Sainsbury’s overtook even Waitrose in the expense rankings. Asda, on the other hand, is your go-to for savings, being dubbed the cheapest non-discounter supermarket. That's the difference between Sainsbury’s and Asda for a similar shop. Aldi stole the show with the least expensive basket of 39 items, costing an average of just £67.72.
Dive deeper, and the figures show Asda was the best amongst 'traditional' supermarkets. They managed to edge out the competition, leaving Morrisons trailing behind by £6.51.
For clarity, Which’s analysis takes into account the general discounts but excludes any offers that require a loyalty membership or multibuy specials.
Interesting to note, Sainsbury’s is also beefing up its digital presence. They're set to double in-store screens, aiming to have the most extensive connected digital supermarket screen network. The initiative, in partnership with Nectar 360 and Clear Channel, will offer 'Sainsbury’s Live,' tailoring campaigns based on a range of factors from location and weather to events and competitions.
"It's always a game of balance between convenience, location, and cost. It’s essential to stay informed and shop smartly. Remember, every penny counts in the long run," says Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk.
I think "Asda" is the most expensive, my wife does a bit of shopping in there once a week and every time she goes the prices have shot up by a minimum of 20p. she saw a box of frozen fish in there, that we buy from elsewhere for around £4, and it cost £6 in Asda. Yes, Sainsbury's is dearer than other shops, but not for what we buy.
I really wish 'Which' information wasn't quoted. I remember having a trial of their magazine and the reviews in it were amateur at best and the whole organisation is useless in my opinion. I remember their vacuum cleaner reviews didn't include cost of bags when reviewing vacuum cleaners but marginal differences in sound output were important. These are not the attributes of a vacuum cleaner that I care about. Paying £20-30 a year for bags is significant and should be factored into the price.
I'm sure I read recently that Sainsburys were actually very cheap by another organisation, second only to one of the German supermarket chains. They do a whole load of Aldi price matches, then you have nectar prices plus you have a full range of items to choose from you don't have to make multiple visits to a supermarket. Ultimately it's what you compare in price. I would not trust Which to be fair or competent myself. Also Sainsburys do economy deliveries which are only a £1 so you can save hugely on petrol and your own time.
I recently did a thread about what I paid at Sainsburys for one shop and it was amazing value I thought. I kept to mainly budget labels and the offers and the delivery charge was a £1. Lovely friendly delivery men too.
Absolute rubbish!!
“Which“ strikes again with their magical basket of food items!…those that hardly anyone buys!
Sainsbury’s is actually very reasonable lately, especially with their Nectar prices.
I still think Asda is the cheapest though, and you can get everything you need.
So many people boast about Aldi prices, but then have to go to other supermarkets to buy the stuff they can’t get at Aldi…total false economy!
Morrisons is definitely the most expensive out of the normal supermarkets and has been for years.
Fatabelly Definitely agree about Morrisons for some key items, they seem expensive for bleach for example. I did a shop yesterday there and we got a lot of bargains, mainly reduced price labels and it was a great shop overall but we struggled to do a full shop there as some items were uncompetitively priced. Actually went in to get a joint but there was nothing reasonable there. Still a great value shop for what we bought but a bit like Aldi or Lidl I couldn't get everything needed because refused to pay Morrisons prices for those items where as for Aldi and Lidl its is typically because those items don't exist there or the quality is unacceptable.
